Hi Dave,

The new button lift runs from Grafenweg right up to the bottom of the short schuss just below the reservoir and is called the Ubungslift Tennladen.

For simplicity have a look here for an indication of what I’m talking about ) www.auhof.co.uk/New_Lift.asp

As for a chair on the Tennladen I haven’t heard about that but I do understand that the single chair is to be replaced with a 4-man jobbie going to the top of the Gipfel which should make the whole western end of the resort more accessible and reduce the load on the Marchenwiesen and Tennladen.

Oh and by the way another day is dawning here cold and crisp and sunny – Makes for perfect skiing !!

Ah, now, you are asking a different question but one that I'm happy to answer!

It's about 850m (just Google Earthed it) from the Harfenwirt to Margreiter's shop (http://www.ski-margreiter.at). I assume you will be hiring your kit on day one and returning it on your last day. The Harfenwirt is located just opposite a brand new lift and I would imagine you would do best to keep your kit at the Harfenwirt and just jump on the new lift and go, rather than taking you kit back to Margreiter's every night ;)

As for what I’m doing here, well that’s a long story, but if you PM me I’ll happily catch up with you in the village and share my story over a beer :D

Happy hols,

Jan

Iceman,

You ask a sensible question and I will almost certainly get shot down in flames for my answer but ...

At beginner level, boarding is much faster to learn than skiing. Perhaps this is because there is a reduced need for independent leg action compared to skiing.

I personally think that boarding is so popular with younger people because it takes less effort to learn.

Speaking from my own experience, I have only been boarding for about 2 years but (and please don’t try this at home) I just went to the rental shop, hired a novice board, took a lift to the top of one of the beginners slopes and set off. About an hour later I was confidently carving on the toe and heel edge. I jumped into the gondola and went to ski the hill. By the end of the day I had successfully negotiated reds and blacks without too much bother. Funnily enough the thing I found hardest was a straight run back to the village on a very slightly off camber run. I bailed about 3 times … It’s probably worth noting that I’ve been skiing for over 30 yrs and suspect that this helped me understand lots of the dynamic issues I faced when standing on the board for the first time (oh and in the 70’s I was a demon on the skateboard!).

It would be almost impossible to test, but I would be fascinated to see how quickly a really experienced snowboarder who had never skied could pick up enough ski ability to ski like a good intermediate!

I should say I have no agenda when it comes to ski v board and make the above observations simply because it’s interesting to do so.

I hope you have a great holiday and that you’ll come back and let us know how you found your experience.

Happy boarding,

Jan (or should that be Maverick - doh  shows age again!)

Hi CL,

Now before I start I must explain that I live in Niederau and I chose to live here out of all the places I could in the world. So just be warned that my comments may not represent the views of the majority.

As to your question it would be very helpful to know what you are looking for from your ski holiday and something about how you ski and the things that you enjoy.

Niederau was recently voted the 2nd best ski resort in the Alps for beginners and 5th in the world on the same basis, so if you are a beginner, you are in luck!

Personally I think that this fact distorts the range of skiing available. There are runs that advanced skiers do well to make look easy and (if you know where to go) there are some great un-pisted runs.

However, Niederau is not a big resort, doesn’t have dozens of runs and it’s quite possible to ski every piste at least once well before the end of a short day. The nightlife is limited and if you snowboard then let’s hope you like pomas and T-Bars … There’s only one gondola and a single chair otherwise.

So, give us some more info about your needs and I will try to give you an unbiased opinion of how you will enjoy Niederau.

Jan

Hi,

I'm not sure if you meant to post similar threads but for safety here’s a copy of what I said in the other post:

Hi Blackbrook

The lifts opened on Saturday and there have been almost no people here (I think only one of the main hotels has been open). We currently have perfect conditions although due to the lack of skiers the lift company has decided to keep one of the runs that historically wears thin closed and dump loads of man-made snow on them to really build up the base. It has been averaging about -8 degrees most days and the sun has been shining. It hasn’t snowed since last Friday but the snow is still on the trees.

One of the black pistes has been left unpisted and I was skiing on that run in the powder yesterday, it was still soft and fluffy with no crust. Incidentally, I was still able to find large areas of the piste that were totally untracked and that was on Monday, after the lifts had been open for 2 days (gives you some idea how quite it is here at the moment!)

Although we aren’t expecting any more snow at the moment this isn’t currently a problem the pistes are in fantastic shape.

If you would like to have a regular update PM me and I will let you know when things change.

Jan
Hi all and thanks for the interesting responses. I guess this sort of confirms my suspicions that whilst wearing a Recco can do no harm it also doesn’t ever seem to have done anyone any good :(

I’d still like to hear about anyone who has ever had a successful rescue due to one
