Dolomites, where to stay?
Started by User in Italy, 5 Replies
I have been booking all my own ski breaks myself and not used the tour operators for a good number of years as I usually go for short breaks. This year I plan to go for a week and was just going to book a weeks package. The problem I have is we all want to go to the Dolomites and none of the travel companies go there from Ireland.
I can organise flights and transfers easily but that's where I run out of luck.
I have been reading everyone's reports but so far have come up with very little ideas on accommodation. Is there anywhere that someone can recommend that they might have stayed?
What I am looking for is any kind of accommodation for 4 or 6 of us in twin rooms preferably in Arabba or Selva but am open to suggestion.

Thanks

If you look on the Morzine web site there is 3 or 4 hotels that will do short stay. I stayed in one called the Carolina a few years ago. It was basic enpugh but very close to the ski lifts and town centre.
Alpe D'Huez or Les Deux Alps

Love ADH and have been 3 times and will defo go back some time.
However L2A is a great spot for a few days. All the best skiing is up high and there is a great ski park with ski cross and lots of small jumps and things for a good intermediate to have some fun on. The black back to the town is very steep but is manageable and far better than the flat narrow green run.
If you have never been to either ADH is better but L2A is work a trip too.
Just realised that my picture is taken up near the top of the glacier in Alpe d'Huez!
I have never stayed in La Tania but it looks like a lovely little town and is in a great location too.
Cervinia, dont bother as the skiing is not great and the link to Zermat is the longest drag lift ever (10 Mins!). Its a lovely town with some super restaurants but thats about it.
Meribel, it really is the best place in the 3 valleys to access the whole ski area and the lift system is so good that you can be anywhere very quickly. If you want to maxamise your skiing time and ski new runs each day its hard to beat. The town is not great with a lot of 18 year old posh kids on their gap year that are all too cool.
I did not like Chamonix for the reason already said, its a pain having to travel to each seperate are to ski even if the skiing is very good when you get there.
top three resorts

Meribel/3 Valleys, the vast amount of runs and off piste are hard to beat
Alpe d'Huez, love the place
Loved Morzine/Avoriaz for the skiing
But its hard to leave out anywhere in Italy for the food and the people.
Ski Weekend - Chamonix or somewhere else?

If you are both at a different level then forget Chamonix.
Morzine and Lez Carroz are both great for a short break and have plenty for both of you to ski. I prefer Morzine as its a nice town and the skiing in Avoiraz is excellent too.
Sleeps till ski time
