If there is a layer of ice, the new snow will not bond easily to it, and as we all know, ice is very slippery...

Not very good for reducing vibration. All the best videos that I have seen, seem to be shot from a pole. The pole seems to stabilize the image, as it always remains in the same place, while everything else moves about. Mounted to a ski or board looking backwards so that the ski or board is in the shot also seems to help. Alot of the helmet mount stuff is good, but tends to make me nauseous with all the bumping about.

Plenty of snowboarders using a pole with their gopro too. Also, if you get the chest mount and the grab bag of mounts, you can use the "knuckle" that comes in the grab bag to face the camera more to the front.
On the other hand, the promotional clips are filmed with several cameras, synced up, and edited using very powerful professional video editing software. I am not saying that you won't get good results, just don't expect that you will have quite the same professional looking video at the end of your snow holiday. |

I think the big advantages over a traditional handycam are: 1) completely waterproof 2) you can turn it on at the start of a run and then forget it is there.
There is definitely still a place for the handycam though, we are taking both with us this year and I hope that through using plenty of different angles with the gopro, and mixing in some handycam stuff too, I will have a varied and interesting video at the end. |

You are right about mixing it up, too long from one angle gets boring quite quickly, no matter where you mount the camera. |

Tony you can also get a chest mount harness which still gives you a similar field of view to a helmet mount, could be worth thinking about.

Nice Video Snapzzz. Do you mind if I ask what settings you were using for your filming? I will be taking my gopro to the snow for the first time in 2 weeks, I have used it in the surf, but I am interested in whether I should use different settings for the snow.
