Oh how lucky are you! I would definitely put VT on my list of places to stay if only for a few days to experience the fabulous nightlife there and skiing in the largest linked ski area of the world - the Three Valleys. I would also not miss out on Chamonix - the place is legendary, the views stunning and the varied terrain and nightlife is "absolutely to die for" as one of your compatriots described it to me when I was there last! Enjoy Europe and the skiing whatever happens!!

Hi Barb - I am a SMdB big fan. We love to head over to Mont Vallon to do the two Reds from the top of there. The views over Mont Blanc from the Summit are stunning. Combe de Vallon is steep at the top but wide the other run Campagnola is narrower at the beginning. Going towards Courchevel Creux is a really nice run from the top of Saulire - Combe Saulire is steeper at the top but there is a way round it. If you are feeling adventurous head over to Orelle and down the Mauriennaise. Coming back to St Martin from the top of 3 Vallees 2 head down the BVD de la Lance and David Douillet following the signs to Roc de Trois Marches 2 it is the quickest way back from VT Les Men and avoids Cumin. Paul - Alp Hotel has new Belgian owners so I will be interested to hear your review when you get back. Enjoy yourselves - I will be back Feb 19th....

There is lots of self catering accommodation in Chamonix and lots to do there for non skiers in the town and surroundings, trains to Vallorcine & St Gervais and beyond, Cable car up to the Aiguille de Midi, railway up to the Mer de Glace, but for skiers the lifts and ski areas are spread out.
I was quite impressed with Les Deux Alpes in the summer - lots of nice bars, shops and restaurants and the town is flat. There are a couple of villages down in the valleys that can be visited by lifts too, a swimming pool and ice rink. The skiing is extensive and there is a glacier however access back to the resort in winter is served by only one beginners run I believe. Alpe d'Huex by contrast is very spread out over the mountain and personally would not think it would be suitable for non skiers. Easter is late this year with the Easter weekend falling at the end of most school holiday fortnight. Many of the Austrian resorts seem well set up for non skiers but I only have experience of one which was quite small. |

Not stayed in St Francois so cannot comment. Have stayed in St Sorlin and whilst the skiing was ok the 310km of Les Sybelles is still not well connected and the main ski areas of Le Corbiere and la Toussuire are 60's villages so not that easy on the eye.
St Sorlin is a more traditional village but it is spread out and does not have a definite centre. Restaurants and Bars were limited when we visited in 2005 (I think!. |

I have just booked a weeks camping in the summer in Bourg d'Oisans. It is my intention to ski in LDA some mornings :D so will let you know how easy it is to get there!
My son went at New Year and there is quite a large centre with lots of Bars and clubs. I have not stayed in Les Arcs only skied there from Montchavin Les Coches and the skiing was great - lots of cruisy wide blues with some good reds and blacks to tempt also. We went February half term and did not find it too bad. We did the Aiguille Rouge which is an awesome run. However the villages are spread out and probably don't offer the same nightlife as LDA. |
