I never stop :!:

However, about 3 minutes ago I got extremely excited because I've been informed by amazon that my "where to ski and board 2009" has been dispatched!!!!!!

The world can kiss goodbye to me for a while

My ambition is to get my ski kit, including my boots, on as hand luggage, so as to cut the journey to the Alps by the luggage waiting time. (I use Easyjet) Haven't figured it out yet though. I am down to 13Kgms. I only ever take four days clothes, wash and dry each night.

This is wholly achievable with Easyjet who have not banned ski boots as hand luggage. However there are numerous anecdotal reports of (various airports UK and abroad) security staff refusing to allow ski boots through as hand luggage, despite the meeting of all gov't/EU restriction criteria for size, shape, material etc.
Of course it could all be a ruse to make folks buy hold luggage space

we experienced this at new year. we had no problem taking them out but coming home we weren't even allowed to put them in the hold! they had to go through as special equipment. very annoying . I might as well buy skis if I have to join that queue

for 6 days of skiing my list for my 7 and 11 year old is:

one jacket and salopettes each
two thin fleeces each / long sleeve t-shirts for warmer days
3 sets of thermals each (wear twice or wash)
3 pairs of ski socks each (ditto)
wooly hat for when they're not wearing helmets
silk glove liners
mittens (as bandit said, they're better, they can clench their fingers together for warmth)
hand warmers (the things you shake to warm up and put in your gloves - priceless!)
snow boots / timberland type boots
goggles

I think that's it. hope it helps :D

I'm not at all certain that it's possible to strengthen ligaments, only the muscles.

Yup, that's how I see it too.

Tis true I'm afraid.

You can help if it's your mcl though - I don't know which ligament you've injured but your mcl is very close to the surface. if you massage at the point of pain you can help the scar tissue to heal, apparently it's like chewing gum and can be moulded. I'm no doctor though so I'd see a physio first if I were you.

I'll also be taking trencher's skating advice once I'm up to scratch. My exercises at the moment are building me up to sideways movements. it's such a long process

Can I suggest you send a PM to Caron-a on this forum? She is recovering from a knee op and is working hard to return to fitness.

I'm a bit lethargic at the moment! However, when I get back I'll be in the swing of things again I'm sure.

Lynn, I can pm you some of the exercises we do in my knee class if you like, the list is long... but the long and short of it is to build up the quads and hamstrings so as to protect your knee.

the best advice from me is to go out on a bike. the one good thing i could take from my accident is the purchase of my lovely bike!

good luck

the cycling has done it for me.

Chris Hoy is a legend but I most enjoyed the team pursuit. They beat their world record twice and the second time they posted was 11 seconds faster than their performance in sydney!

total dedication

caron-a wrote:could the altitude sickness also be down to how fast you travel? my 7 year old skied all of the espace killy for days with no problems but the day we took him up on the (extremely fast) funicular he was as white as a ghost and we had to bring him back down after plying him with lots of water.

That's right, we mostly have the ability to adapt to moderate alterations in altitude but a sudden alteration like that can be upsetting. Funiculars are particularly bad compared to chair lifts as the pressure in the tunnels is a bit odd. A 7 year old would be susceptible in this way.

Your action in bringing him down and hydrating was pretty much text book and erred on the side of caution. I would probably have hydrated and waited for 30 minutes or so but I'd need to be there to see the exact symptoms or know exactly where he'd be on the Lake Louise scale, but if in doubt then descend.

To be honest I get about the same if we're climbing on/near the Matterhorn or Jungfrau, the ascents are too quick and I feel nauseous at least 3 times out of 5 for a few minutes.

that's what we did, call it mother's intuition. we stayed up there about 45 minutes and came down two bottles of water later.

it was pretty hairy coming down in the funicular though. if you haven't tried it (which I reckon most people haven't because they'd ski it) it's worth the experience!
