You can't tar the whole country with your brush just because you had a bad experience, I am pretty sure there will be more to Turkey than Marmaris ;)

What made you choose to go on this trip, or was it part of a uni course?

The Emirates Towers are seriously impressive, the mall inside is ridiculous too but I doubt they see much but Gold/Platinum cards

I fail to see how anyone could be unimpressed by the Burj Dubai, a building that is 818m tall  Nearly 4 times the height of Canary Wharf. Maybe the pictures don't give that impression but standing underneath it is an experience.

I have a friend that lives there so just went out to visit him for a while. He asks every year and I was lucky enough to have the money this time round.

Cool, glad you enjoyed it.
But to me its all just about showing the world how much money you have got, and particularly in the current climate, I find it all in bad taste. Especially when you consider the plight of so many people in Africa for example, not a million miles away from there.

In fairness the Burj was started a long time ago, a lot of people have left Dubai and their economy is crumbling too. We got a new car a few months ago when people about 3 miles from here are in relative poverty, I don't feel particularly bad about it. Dubai needs to invest now otherwise when the oil runs out (they don't have a whole lot left) they will be left with nothing and the desert will swallow the cities and towns again.

I know people who go there for six star luxury, a servant to attend every whim......not really my cup of tea, rather spend my hard earned cash in a little more understated way

Your choice, and theirs. If I am spending my money I look to see what is the best value for however much I have. For the record, my buddies place did have a maids quarter but they don't employ one. They do send the washing out though ;)

I will have a look, don't think so, will get back to you.

I have 2 friends living in both Dubai and Oman and I've been invited to visit - I sort of thought Dubai wasn't on my list of places I wanted to see but I might have to reconsider :)

I would go again tomorrow but I would want at least a month to see everything I wanted to.
