I was under the impression that they were given to ski resorts if they requested them. They are too big to carry for personal use.

I've been toting with avalung for a while, but a part of me thinks this may only prolong the agony in said set of circumstances. Is there any way of reducing risk here? Or is it a simple condition of the pleasure I seek?

A transceiver will, usually the back country areas you ski will be frequented by plenty people (who will also be carrying them) who will be able to locate you quickly. Many people are taken alive from avalanche debris each year. There is a video somewhere of a guy being stuck under the snow and being dug out... I'll find it.

At least I know what the Recco on my new ski boots means now, and they will be found okay if I should be unlucky enough to be caught in an avalanche.

I'm surprised the reccos don't get damaged in the wash on jackets etc. though.

They've not got any moving parts and they are totally solid.

Was 16 degrees here today. Would be happy if summer never arrived now.

180 would probably be fine but it would be best to try them. From a marketing point of view it would seem to make more sense to have a 179 length. What terrain do you like to ski?

Someone told me that Whistler was propping up most of their operations. I know a lot of people were wishing Intrawest would disappear.

Squaw has a bigger base right now than most resorts in North America have had all season. They are definitely still open. Mammoth is open in to June too.

In saying that, having your daughter try a few pairs is probably the best option, if you really have to decide then I'd go something in the low 150s.
