I agree bandit, but there seems to be some sort of stigma attached to getting a lift back to the resort

If you think about it, it is quite easy to return to Val without skiing down. There is the gondola back from both Solaise and the top of La Face, or the gondola or funicular down to La Daille, and then a short free bus back to Val.

Yet every time I go, I see loads of people struggling down runs they are not suited to, which leads to runs which are simply massively overcrowded because people are blocking them up.

It is perhaps one of the few downsides of Val D'Isere in my opinion.

Hi Rustyinn, I pretty much have to agree with Julia re Val D'Isere. Although it is a great resort, it can be a right pain for complete beginners to ski back to. I would have thought that most would end up getting lifts back down, or skiing down to other areas and getting the bus back.

If my memory from two years ago is correct, the only lift which may have been free is a very small one just to the left of the solaise lifts. But it is not a lift I have ever used so cannot be sure.

Also, I would have thought that beginners would be in a class of some sort, at which point they are going to need a pass in Val.
I think it could do with the traffic lights to provide that extra bit of excitement when required.
Austria- When to ski?

Hi freshfreshpowder,

for what it's worth, I have been on a cheap trip which should have been not so good snow conditions, but turned out to be one of the best trips of my life, and at the same time, I have had practically unskiable conditions at a time which should have been about the best of the season. I guess you pays your money and takes your chances.

Unless you can leave it to the last minute before booking, you just have to take what the ski gods throw at you.

I am going to Kitzbuhel for the first time this year, in fact it is my first visit to Austria full stop, and we are going over the first week in Feb. This is primarily due to the fact it is convenient for all 14 people going. However, we will have a good time whatever the conditions

I learnt to stop worrying about the conditions quite a while ago. Just enjoy what you get and make the best of it.

Hi Rocksy,

as Old Andy says, there are loads of factors which will effect what you like as a resort for your holiday, and these will be different for most people.

Having said that, personally I would suggest that you check out somewhere like Tignes. Tignes is part of the Espace Killy and has a pretty extensive ski area, linked with Val D'Isere. There is plenty of intermediate skiing, along with plenty of more advanced options should you decide to get adventurous. You could also look at Val D'Isere, but from what you have said I think Tignes may suit you better.

Tignes is split into three villages, and I think it will offer you what you are looking for in terms of apres ski. There is a full range of stuff from quiet bars to nightclubs. Most of the accommodation is very close to the snow, and if not actually ski in/ski out, is little more than a very short walk. I've not been there for a few years, but the buses between the villages used to be covered by your lift-pass, so plenty of options in the evening.

I don't know where you live, but another advantage of Tignes (and the surrounding areas) is that you can go by train, which is nice for those of us down in the South East :)

:(

Don't know if it could be done now, but we used to "bung" a rep at the airport and always (well we did it twice) got on a half full coach going to our resort.

The reps even sorted out our lift passes for us on the journey.
So who fancies skiing Everest then?
