Sound financial advice, from Tony the financial advisor
Ski hire options

I used snowbrainer last week. The hire shop said that they preferred skiset but that's probably because skiset were dearer and the hire shop got a bigger cut. Cynical? Me?

Anyway, saved over £30 using snowbrainer, booked the 'bronze' skis and boots, turned up in the hire shop and they got me to complete a form. Came out with 'silver' skis & boots.

I didn't anticipate just how despondent I would be after returning from my ski hols at the weekend. Prior to going, I'd be constantly looking at the snow reports etc and now, well, now I have nothing to look forward to....some people might say that 3 weeks in South Africa at the end of March would be enough to ease the post-ski hols depression but not for me...

I might just have to become a 'more than once a season' skiier...but where to get the money from?!
Skiing Powder

My instructor had me doing some 'gentle off piste' skiing last week. The key things that I had to remember were to keep the skis closer together, to keep my weight just over centre and to initiate a 'bounce' before making a turn. The idea behind this was that the skis remain in below the snow when travelling straight and the bouncing action gave the skis some rebound which lifted them out of the snow. It was at the top of the rebound that the turn could be made. Oh...and snowploughs are as ineffective skiing on 'two by fours'.

Let's just say that I'll have to wait for my next ski holiday before I can suggest I'm any good in powder.

An 'advanced intermediate' would probably be a better description of Chemmy...oh, and she's quite the looker too!!

Anyway, just got back from N. My thoughts:

Great snow, especially in Auffach. Great people. Decent enough skiing on offer. I'd agree that it is limited but I'd also have to agree with Dave Mac in that you can ski each run differently each time. I personally had a really good time skiing both N and Auffach. It's also a very good resort for young families and beginners. The Red ski school are fantastic (had my kids skiing red runs by the 6th day and even gave my wife 'free' one to one tuition when she was struggling in her group). We had such a good experience that we are definately returning next year.

On the downside, N is a ghost town. The week I was there, there was very little evening entertainment. The few bars there are, are frankly awful. But hey, I was ready for bed by 9pm most nights so a raving party town would have been lost on me! I did meet some really nice people though and had a good laugh whenever I did stay up long enough to go out.

To recap, N is a decent place to go if you're happy making the most of the limited slopes or you're after first class ski tuition or you have a young family in tow.

He told me that he would write up about it when he got home. I can only conclude that he is still on his world tour. And let's be honest, no one is going to rush to get back to Scotland, are they?

I'm talking about the ache you get when you wear those horrible rented skiboots all day long. Especially if you're new to the sport. As my wife will be/is.

So...to plan in advance, I'm going to take a whole heap of 'remedies' which will enable her to get through a week of skiing.

I've read that simple things like ibuprofen gel works well. I was also thinking deep heat or ralgex.

What else can be recommended, out of experience?

Cheers....
