It's a bewildering choice really. One minute I've convinced myself Niederau is where we are going and the next minute I'm considering Flaine or Alpe D'Heux!

But Niederau it is...going to book it on Monday so it's one less thing to worry about.

You know what though, I haven't been skiing for over 10 years and I can't believe how much the cost has gone up.

Heh....I've just re-read what I typed above. I meant to type £2660 for the whole package! Is that still a good price?

I'll blame it on the bottle of wine I had!

I've got a deal for hotel/flights/HB for 2 adults + 2 kids, first time ski packages x 3 and improver ski package x 1 for £1660 (for 6th Feb). A good deal?

Hey Ally

I did look at Obergurgl and it did interest me.

The thing with me, as I mentioned earlier, is that the OH nor the kids have skiied before. Which means that, at best, they'll be tackling blues by the end of the week. Being their first ski hols, I don't want to go off skiing on my own them and would prefer to spend as much time with them as possible. This kinda rules out reasons for going to 'bigger, better' ski areas.

Secondly, I'm also quite keen on non-ski activities i.e. toboganning, sleigh rides etc.

The cost is not really a concern (I'm paid pretty well) but the quality of ski-school is very important.

I'm 90% convinced that Niederau is going to be my destination. Almost 100% that it'll be week commencing 6/2/2010 and probably staying at the Hotel Simmerwelt (through Neilsons). Does anyone here have any experience of this hotel? Also, is early Feb a good time to visit Niederau?

Thanks for everyones input....

PS - forgot to mention that January is a big no-no for me as it's impossible to get any time off....I'm a Tax Advisor and January is self-assessment deadline which means it's crazy manic for me...

Another thing....

What do people think is the best time to go skiing in Austria (or anywhere in Europe for that matter). I've only ever been in the first week of Feb every time. Are the conditions better in Feb or Mar? Or does it not matter?

Thanks again

Some interesting points from everyone so far. It's definately given me other options to consider.

I've been to Andorra twice before (Soldeu 95 & Pas 99) but both times were with a group of lads. Back then, it was 'cheap & cheerful' but the beer/girls was just as important as the skiing...

As I'm now going with a wife & two young children, the criteria has shifted. My main priorities are ensuring the ski schools are excellent for kids and that there are plenty of off-slope activities i.e. sledding/tobogganning etc. I know Andorra has some excellent ski schools. I don't know how the Austrian resorts fare re. this.

Anyway, the update is that I'm seriously considering Katschberg, Galtur, Kaprun, Obergurgl, Niederau & St Johann (in Tirol) as serious possibilities. There is also a cracking deal for Morzine (departing 30/1/09)...has anyone been or would recommend?

PS - AllyG, thanks for the pointers...definately helped!

Hi all

I appreciate there are countless other threads, probably asking the same question I am but I just can't seem to make them help me!

I'm hoping to take my family on their first ski holiday, probably during February 2010 (avoiding the ridiculously expensive half term though). The wife and both kids (aged 10 & 6) have never skiied before (I'll probably give them a taster at an Xscape) and I haven't been for over 10 years myself.

I've been looking at what seems like a million websites, trying to make a decent educated decision but there's just too much to choose from. Ultimately, you can't beat someone's recommendation based on their experiences, hence where you guys come in!

I had narrowed it down to Arinsal, Soldeu or Passo Tonale. It's not a decision bourne completely out of cost but I'm aware that I don't want to pay a fortune in case the wife doesn't like it. However, I'm coming more and more to the idea that the money is now not as important as finding a resort where the ski tuition is excellent and somewhere where the kids will find other like minded kids. I guess my initial choice of Soldeu or Arinsal seems like the best idea then!

Any input most welcome & appreciated...
