Following on Bandits suggestion, Bad Gastein, or the nearby Felsentherme ~ heaps of spa orientated places.
I can offer a personal experience. Last season we had a family ski stay at the Hotel Sportiv, Obergurgl. It is directly connected to sister hotel, the Crystal. The Crystal has an indoor pool and a separate outdoor pool. The outdoor pool is warmer, and is surrounded by splendid snow capped mountain views. It also has steam and sauna rooms. As a bonus, the ski rental is in the basement, the gondola is 10m from the ski room door. The skiing is wide and varied, you can get the high gondola across to Hochgurgl, and by paying 10 Eu extra, your lift pass covers Solden for a day. (Next valley, 25min bus journey) I got a good deal when I put a couple of paintings on Inghams web site. (Maybe I would have paid less if I hadn't put the paintings on!) The hotels are 10 min walk away from the centre, so if you use ski school you need to catch the ski bus. The Sportiv is a fair bit lower on cost, mainly because you have to do the connecting walk, underground or over-road tunnel. Then there is the Thursday night quiz, won by the Macs! |

La Tania a good choice for location. We had mixed ability group and it suited us well. The location of our chalet allowed us to hoof 50m through the trees, and come out halfway down a piste ~ (the Gross Murgur?), and ski down into LT ~ and similarly return at night.
I seem to recall there was a lift you could catch down at night into the village. AND ~ I competed and sold three paintings, which paid for my lift pass ~ Result! Like you, I have looked for low cost 3V options, and one year ended up in Brides-les-Bain. Interesting..... |

That's pretty tough, Chemmy,I guess few have of us have had your share of steel additives, and still ski at all, let alone at a high level!
I too avoid painkillers ~ but in the winter I mainline on Ibruprofen! Come back gradually...... |

I agree with Ranchero regarding the cloudbase at Whistler, but when the weather is clear, Whistler/Blackcomb has to be in the top 3 to 5 of a world list.
I would rate both Breckenridge and Vail above Whistler, partly because of the range and variety, but also the consistency of conditions. My personal favourite above all others is Arapahoe Basin, it is challenging, and high. Also scenic in only a way that an American cowboy and indian resort could be. However, I can see that it would not be a favourite for many. ~ is my perception. |

Hmm, I see Benni Reich and friends are on their way to Zermatt ~ Austrian-Canadian fireworks!
We had them both on the race arena in Niederau, week before the Hahnemkamm! |

Serious enthusiasm!
Re the new equipment, I am guessing that the changed ski radius takes the skis to a point that pre-dates your start of ski racing? Like many others, I think it is a retrograde move, but it has happened, and I guess the racers just have to get on with it. Just musing, I wonder how far down the race scale will the new regs apply ~ to national level, regional, local leagues.... |
