December 15th

Looks like December the 15th will be the first day of the season for many resorts.
Morzine is very low and unlikely to have any skiing but up at the linked resort of Avoriaz slopes will be open.
La Plagne resorts are much higher and far more likely to have skiing at resort level.
If it were me at that time I would also see if Tignes/Val D'Isere or Val Thorens were possible.
How good the snow is likely to be is in the lap of the snow dancers
Very early season skiing is always a gamble but getting to one of the high resorts, especially if glacier skiing is available increases the chance of good snow.

I will be in France in January for one week.
Have a nice.

If you are in france then go skiing.
Where would depend on where in france you are either staying or arriving.
If you have the opportunity then go to the Alps rather than the Pyrennees.
Where are you coming from?
Is the one week in France purely for skiing?
What do you want from skiing holiday in France?
Skiing after an injury

Oh dear broom,
What a shame .....
I have no great words of wisdom either way with your conundrum except I do know people in similar situations.
About 50/50 in my experience.
Half get back into it and half give up.

Two stories .....
My dear Sister, late 50's back problem a few years ago resulting in surgery. back to skiing very merrily in 2010 but then hip went. Hip replacement last autumn. Seeing consultant soon for discussion about starting skiing again. Mind you she is mad :D

Old friend, ligament damage from skiing accident. Tried skiing, problems, gave up for several years. Children and hubbie wanted to go, she tagged along, got bored not skiing, tried again and loved it, especially with her children.

Oh and another mate has completely given up any thought of skiing on medical advice. He was crashed into resulting in broken ribs and collar bone. Collar bone is the prob, it hasn't healed and a bump would lead to serious issues (life threatening potentially).

I suppose the question is ....
Is your lack of enjoyment down to fear of injury or is the experience just not doing it for you? I wonder if the answer to this question could help you decide?

Either way ....
All the best!

Nice to see you back Theo ........
Replying to several posts in one place.
Have had some thoughts about a new SnowDance video but am not that sure that I can top last years amazing effort.

I have also decided that what we are seeing on here over the last week or so is the return of the migratory species.

Having been one of those that have never left even though last season feels a long time ago and next season very much in the air I have been on here several times a week all summer.

Others haven't.

I have decided this is nothing to do with my being a sad old g*t but just a resident species.
I live here all year.
Others are migratory ........
Goin to different climates during the off season, a bit like birds.
At the moment we are seeing the return of the Swallows and Cuckoos ....

This, of course, heralds the start of the pre-season rituals.
See ????
I wonder if one way to approach this is to think about the type of holiday rather than any specifics of resort or country?

It sounds to me as if the two issues are something for teenagers and a way for Mum to enjoy some skiing company?

Maybe a British run chalet hotel would be a good answer? One with good guiding for Mum and, at Easter, an increased likelihood of other kids of similar ages both for on piste and off piste fun (apres ski rather than hairy skiing!).

The last time my Lout came skiing with me (16yo at the time) we had a very sucessful trip where he found some fun with other teenagers and the young hotel staff and I skied with some other adults some of the time. This was with Ski Total in Courchevel, but the guiding was only on a couple of days.

Last year I went with Mark Warner on my own and the guiding was of really great quality - every day and several groups of different ability. The key is checking out how many days guiding is available. Some places offer little more than a quick whizz around the area while others offer a more comprehensive service. Similarly with choice of country. Austria, for example, has restrictions on how many days per week guiding can be offered.

At Easter this could be costly as it is peak holiday period and being the end of the season the best snow will be in the higher resorts.

If you are OK sharing a room with your tribe this could drastically reduce the cost, or on the other hand, it may be that the budget is quite high?

With a big chalet hotel there is also an increased likelihood that you will find other like minded adults to hang around with on and off the slopes as well as the kids teeming up with others - all adding to the chance of a great holiday for all.

You are right to be looking now as the best rooms etc will get booked up early for the Easter holiday period.

NellyPS wrote:So how easy is it to get to the funicular from the station? We'd be arriving around 6 am so I'm guessing it might not be running then. Probably going to Paisey x

Take a bit of care Nelly here. Peisey is way over towards La Plagne from 1600 and 1800. I am not sure there is even a road that goes direct between les Arcs and Peisey.

When I was there, in a different epoc, the route to Peisey was from the bottom of the valley down towards la Plagne.

Nor me sob

Now Nelly ...
I will freely acknowledge that TonyH can raise different emotions in people he is (to me) a valued member of this forum and calling him a SOB just because he hasn't booked his ski holiday yet does seem a little extreme.
