Always, and I mean always split your risk when travelling. Be it 20 minutes on the bus or a safari in Kenya. Keep a card and half your cash in your wallet/purse, and keep the rest in a different article of your clothing. Even if you were to be mugged they would likely find the first and run. Lose your jacket and there is enough to get home etc etc.

I don't usually keep more than about 50 euros in the apartment and 50 euros in my ski jacket pocket. I also always keep all my cards and both our passports in my jacket pocket. My financial back up is that I put some of my money on my daughter's card for emergency use and she keeps her card in her pocket - she had a lovely time spending it all after we got home :D

I hope whoever it was who lost all that money gets it back from their insurers.

There has only been one occasion when we thought someone might possibly have stolen something from us. When we were shown into our room in our very posh 4 star hotel room in Obergurgl, the guy said there was a present for us in our room. Well, we ransacked the room looking for a present  and we couldn't find one anywhere  The only clue we found was a bottle shape in the snow on our balcony. We always wondered if they'd put a bottle out there for us and someone had nicked it ...
