Yesterday I made the fatal mistake of going into TK Maxx in Middlesbrough. I didn't need anything but thought a quick look couldn't hurt…..

A 'few' pounds later, I'm now the proud owner of some new gloves, goggles… oh, and a woolly hat (I just about managed to resist two rather nice ski jackets.) On the plus point, the gloves were £25 instead of £60 and the goggles half RRP so I can't complain. :D

Add to that £70 for a new pair of walking boots to wander round the resort in (my current and once perfectly good pair got eaten before Christmas by a very destructive Alsatian that had already devoured a riding hat, body protector and God knows what else  and it was quite an expensive trip out.

If anyone is interested, the Alsatian in question is now looking for a new home and should be thankful it disappeared before I could catch it, or it could well have been an ex dog! :)

Hi Lynn

I know exactly what you mean. I bought a beautiful pair of ski trousers, pink and brown check more like boarding pants really that were cheap at £40 however, this necessiated a new pink jacket to match trousers so came out £100 lighter! and this after having new salos and jacket last year!! The only problem with TK Maxx is sizing, got home to find trousers were too small so all had to go back!

You don't really mean that about the alsation do you??!! you should just be tidier

My boxer eats (literally) anything - he's had to be opened up twice to have various debris removed that's got lodged in his gut!

I went to Mountain Warehouse just before Christmas to "have a look" at some new lightweight salos as mine had knackered zips and I like to have a choice over my heavyweight ones which can be too warm on a sunny Alpine day.

Came out an hour later with 2 pairs of pants for me, a new pair for the wife, a puffer jacket for her and a breathable top (also for her - spot a trend?). It was all cheap anyway, they were having a 20% off day and we got talking to the manager who gave us a bit more discount and some chapsticks on carabenas to clip to your gear (cool for free) - and it was still only about £90!!!

I LOVE gear shops - but HATE my bank manager

No, I love animals (my Jack Russell was guilty of similar crimes), though I was pretty annoyed about the boots as you can imagine! I'd only put them down for a second whilst I changed into my wellies!

Sadly though the Alsatian isn't mine (she lives at the stables where I keep my horse) and she is looking for a new home. She is costing the people who own the place a fortune having to replace everyone's kit (they don't even know about my boots!) I think there is someone who wants to take her so I'm not worried. I think she just needs more attention and TLC, which as a farm dog she sadly isn't getting at the moment. )

On the sizing front, I usually try everything on before I buy it as the sizes vary so much from brand to brand. It could just be me, but I tend to find with ski clothing that I need to go a size bigger than normal. Shame your lovely new salos didn't fit, but it's often worth keeping an eye open - the jacket that I bought last year was also available this season so they may come into stock again. :D

I bought another pair instead, very boring black and white, but a bargain at £15 for D2 I thought.

Last year I took hubby's adviced and bought salos with straps so as to keep the snow out if I fell over, however I don't fall over as often as I need to pee, but of course that doesn't cause him any problem in them at all!!!

I don't know if Tk Maxx, and TJ Maxx ship clothing between the US, and the UK, But it's likely that clothing intended for the US market, ends up in the UK anyway. US women's clothing sizes are smaller than the UK sizes. Same thing for footwear as well.

because I'm so inclined .....
