AllyG wrote:And, back to the subject of this thread - the cost of our ski-ing holiday. The apartment is costing 1000 euros (about £943 at 1.06) for 3 people, and the train costs £300 each, I can't remember what the transfer bus is - around 20 euros each I think. Lift pass, ski and boot hire and full day lessons for me totals £462. So my personal total is about £1100. But I will have to pay for my daughter as well, so I will have to pay about £2200. Plus of course those little extras one forgets about until you look at the bank statement. The food I don't count, because I would be shopping and eating at home, even though it costs a bit more in mountain supermarkets.

Ahhhhh Couchevel!!!!!

1 timble of hot chocholate and a crepe = €12 X 5 for kids and 4 coffees €5 each for 4 adults and we have a nice bill of €80.

Stay away from piste side cafe's!!!!

Couple of minutes walk in the forum across the road in 1850 much cheaper for snacks.

Also for some reason, local Spar shuts between about 11am and 2pm, some scam there too me thinks.

Apart from that great place to ski

Thanks TC,
We are planning on keeping well away from cafes, and eating in our apartment. I think a lot of French shops shut at lunchtime. They seem to like 2 hour lunch breaks. But they open until quite late at night - the huit a huit supermarket chain seems to do what it says and stays open until 8 p.m. apart from lunch time. I will make sure I do my shopping ahead of time.

Travelmoneyservices & other pre-order sites are currently offering 1.13 euro to the pound for December & January delivery. Probably the best
deal around at the moment, just ordered mine in an effort to keep the overall cost of the holiday down.

Just under the bridge towards Le Praz on the left hand side there is a cheap outdoor takeaway cafe that does an American (with Chips) for about 6 Euros - not bad in a resort where you can see Champagne on sale for 3000 Euros a bottle  The trick is in Courchevel is not to follow the ESF ski instructors with their clients - they take them to the most expensive places. Avoid anything that overlooks the airstrip - Cartier Diamonds on sale as you walk in is always a giveaway that a place may be a tad expensive....

So here is my cost:

Flights Edinburgh/Munich ~ Free with NW Your points
Transfer, Train & bus to Niederau ~ (28+6) x 2 = 68 Euros
B&B, 29 x 7 ~ 261 Euros

Total 261 Euros, £238pp for a week.

No ski costs, I keep several pairs in Niederau, along with some clothing.

March, 2 weeks, slightly cheaper. Two of us, so we have an apartment with balcony, overlooking mountain, a Euro per head cheaper, and taxi becaomes cheaper.

Lift Pass, 211 Euros. If just 3 weeks, £64 per week
If I can get a 4th week, £48 per week

You've got it off to a tee now Dave by the look of it, thats cheap skiing alright, well done.

How does that compare to other trips you make though, ie I think you were looking at visiting St Anton weren't you?

St Anton trip cost is £570, staying in a hotel, but, we have a £55 Edinburgh supplement hit. I have to admit, although I am lucky enough to live an a fabulous place, there can be issue with access to Europe, when going with T/Os. The Salzburg flight has completely gone.

Last year, we nearly got stuffed when all the New Year flights from Scotland filled up by Autumn. Our view is that when you want to go somewhere, bite the bullet. We could have gone to loads of cheaper places elsewhere, but the Arlberg beckons, it's one of the last big places remaining for me in Austria.

I think that is probably a reasonable price anyway.
