Passo Stelvio / Prad am Stilfserjoch - Ski Resort in Italian Alps (2760m to 3450m)

Sitting up at 2760 metres, the bottom lift station at Italy's Passo Stelvio ( Stilfserjoch ) is the highest lift base in Europe, with trails up to 3450 metres, giving a near 700 metre vertical. The centre, one of Europe's largest Summer Skiing areas, has 10 runs, all but one of which are graded 'red' or of intermediate/more difficult standard, the other is an easy trail. 8 surface lifts give access to the individual trails, with the ski area itself reached by the Passo Stelvio - Trincerone cable car, capable of moving 1000 skiers per hour. A second cable car with half that capacity continues up to Livrio at 3170 metres. Lifts are open from 8am to 5pm. A small ski school operates throughout the summer season and regular competitions are staged with themes such as 'Ski Style'. Cross Country skiers have three high-altitude loops of 3, 5 and 8km length. A bus service links the glacier from the nearest rail stations at Bormio or Merano. At Passo Stelvio / Stilfersjoch itself there are 8 hotels ranging from one star to the four star Hotel Thöni 3000 with indoor pool and sauna - one of Europe's highest. There are a number of lively bars and restaurants and two discothèques to provide the night life.
