We will soon be moving to Baden which is quite close to Zurich. My Wife has only ever had one lesson Skiing in her life so I would like to ask where would be the most suitable place for a beginner to learn to ski near Zurich?

Last year I had a couple of days spare and a cheap flight to Zurich so visited the Flumserberg ski area - it's only an hours drive south from the airport (which is on north side of Zurich).

Very easy areas to learn on (I had a complete beginner with me) along with some nice wide blues to progress to. Also some very entertaining reds and a black for the more experienced, they certainly kept me amused for a few days.

It was very much a 'weekend' resort - I think half of Zurich heads there when conditions are good but on the Monday & Tuesday the slopes were almost empty, obviously the pares is a very quiet during week as a result, but there was still some to be found and the locals were very friendly. Also while almost everone spke very good English, we as native English speakers were very much a rarity with an Aussie being the only other sould we found. But it really gave it that nice feel of actually being 'abroad'.

We were also able to get pretty good rates on hotel and equipment hire as we were there during week rather than weekend.

Anyway, hope that helps.

Dave

Thanks Dave,

I will certainly look this ski area up. It sounds like it could be just what I am looking for. Mid week trips will be the norm. Hopefully there is a ski school there also. As they say, never try to teach your own Wife to ski. It is just not worth the silent treatment on the way home in the car.

Appreciate the help.

Colin, where exactly are you moving to, Baden describes a huge amount of Southern Germany and some Northern Switzerland. I live in SW Germany and can offer all kinds of advice and cheap hints.

Certainly was one ski school - probably more. The one my friend used were very patient and helpful as she was a very nervous beginner but she came on leaps and bounds in the few days we were there.

Thanks Dave, i will see if I can find anything on the web before traveling there.

Tino, we are still looking around for some accommodation. Friends are suggesting Zurich which is 20 mins by train, but we would prefer somewhere out of town but with easy access to the train.

I also want to get back into Mountain Biking in the summer, so somewhere close to the mountains would be preferable.

Any suggestions (plus cheap ones) would be more than welcome.

Winterthur is a nice compact town with great links to both Zurich and it's airport. I'm not sure about resorts close by, I normally head further south when going to Switzerland. Come back to you after work.
