Mayrhofen views

Hi there,

I've been looking at resorts in Austria and the biggest resort I can get a good price on is Mayrhofen working out at around £530 each (including pass)with free ski hire thrown in for the gf. Priced other resorts - St Anton, saalbach, zell am see and Ischgl and were working out too pricey.

Looks like I may be booking Mayrhofen soon and was wondering if anyone has any tips / guides or can point me in the directions of other posts made with good info on Mayrhofen. Both myself and my gf are intermediate.

We also got the same price offered for Soll, so If given the choice where should we go? My biggest concern is where has the best snow?

This year I will have my own skis to take and was wondering if I put them in one bag allong with 2 pairs of boots would I get away with the one ski charge?

Great resort for intermediates!!!

Am I detecting a theme, inasmuch as a lot of people seem to be heading to Mayrhofen this season, and talking about it on here?

All I can tell you is what I know from my experience, which consists of a number of previous visits, which pale into insignificance next to Skidaddle, who has been there since he was about 8!

Its a great ski area, the whole lift pass covers Zell, Gerlos, Hintertux etc and you wont be able to cover it all in a week, but its worth a day at Zell for sure, and Hintertux is the back up in the snow isnt good, as its a glacier. However most skiing is at 1800m and above in Mayrhofen, depiste the village being at under 700m. It has a good record for the area, and I have been when they said its the worst snow in 40 years, and it was fantastic skiing!

Nice town, lots going on. Shops, bars, restaurants, cafes. Apres ski is good without being too rowdy. Accommodation is generally of a good standard, large rooms in traditional style mainly. Its a place I would thoroughly recommend. Havent been to Soll, so cant comment, but I would say if you are thinking of Mayrhofen, dont think, book it. Its always good value all round.

As for ski carriage, be careful. Dont put your ski boots in the ski bag, pack them in your case. I always put 2 pairs of skis in my double ski bag, and pack it with socks, bubble wrap, and other items of clothing so that the skis are well padded. You usually get away with 1 ski carriage if you put both pairs in a double bag, as they often mistake it for a board bag. Some people have been known to have their ski bags searched or weighed, but it depends where you fly to/from and which airline you use. Gatwick is usually easy to get skis in without any bother, and coming home has never been a problem. In fact, I have come back with skis when I didnt take any (bought them in resort) and didnt pay for carriage.
However, be prepared to pay a 2nd ski carriage charge if you are unlucky and they weigh or search your bag.
