Hi Hugh,
If you have a look at our group holiday 2014 thread you will see we have a few problems of our own, deciding where to go

Best of luck with your search

My 2 cents:

Around Xmas I very much like being in Val D'Isere. We usually stay in Tignes since the accommodation prices there are lower, but the evenings go to Val D'isere (it's 5 kms from Tignes) and it's amazing. Beautifully Xmas decorated streets, great lightning on all hotels, skating rink, hot wine sold on the street, very often there's live music on the street till dark, lots of bars, the ski runs are great (if you want beginner - stay in Val d'isere, if you prefer advanced - go to Tignes with the ski lifts).

If you book now, you can find something really good within affordable pricing, I've found even last-minute offers fairly priced in d'isere.

Good luck, hope you'll find the best option for your family vacation!

As it's France you could find Cheval on the menu, but AFAIK they don't eat dog in the Tarentaise

I suspect that it would be busy as any large resort would be over Christmas. However, we were extremely impressed with the lift system and extent of slopes when we skied VDi and Tignes in January this year. There was a decent buzz in Val d'Isere town even though it was low season (7th to 14th Jan).
