Les Arcs .......superb skiing, I only took up skiing 3 yrs ago and all my previous trips were to Chamonix. We stayed in Arc 1800 last month and I found Les Arcs much better as all the ski areas are linked. Whilst Chamonix has the benefit of a nice town, it was a pain to get to the slopes.

Subject to finding somewhere that can accomodate one person on their own at a realistic price, I will be back to Les Arcs at the end of March for a long weekend.

Is it Les Arcs where they closed the cable car link this season, thus virtually halving the skiing area?

I also heard that Arc 1800 is one of the most miserable places in the world in the evening. Is this right?

certainly not the apres ski in 1800 compared to chamonix and if you are after a mad nightlife then 1800 is not probably not one, but to describe as miserable is a bit harsh

yes the link over to la plagne was closed, but with the lift access between 1600,1800 and then over the mountain into 1950 and 2000 it meant far more skiing area than Chamonix which is all I can compare to as a recent convert

:Dhi guys & gals,
I could sing the praises of Les Arcs all day, after skiing for about 18years and in places such as Tignes & Val,St.Anton,Livigno,Chamonix, serre chevaliere and whistler i decided that Les Arcs was a gem of a place,so much so that i purchased an apartment in Bourg-st-maurice and still get the same thrill every time i go winter or summer alike.

Although some of the architecture is not the prettiest of places the area has a certain charm, and some of the best retaurants in the alps most of which are family owned and run and not commercial enterprises with chefs and staff bused in.

Also within a short distance by car you still have the resorts of La Rosiere,Ste.Foy,Val & Tignes and if you are a little more adventurous the Trois Vallee's resorts about 1 hour or so away.

With the Eurostar/Tgv-Sncf and transfers from Geneva,Lyon,Grenoble and Chambery all within 2 - 2 1/2 hours drive or a little longer by coach it is also very conveniently placed.

A lot of people do not give it a second thought as they set off for one of the trendy mega resorts, but they are missing out, most who go to Les Arcs are converted within a few days....some stay forever

:Dhi Tony,
By trendy mega resorts i am thinking Val & Tignes,The Trois Vallee's resorts,Zermatt etc, normally the ones where english seems to be the national language.I sometimes get the feeling that the Les Arcs area does not get its dues because of a certain snob value(if thats the right word,or does not have the same bragging rights) some of the other resorts have, people tend to go where the masses go to fit in,and as les Arcs is not seen to be trendy people give it a miss and head up the valley.

But by doing this they are missing out,on some days at certain times of the season it is nearly possible to have the place to your self(some of the more popular resorts pistes can be dangerously crowded towards the end of the day on the final run home,St.Anton & Val to mention a couple)it seeems, also there is skiing for all standards, plenty of off-piste,the flying kilometer(where you can strap on some 200cm skis and try an overhall the world record,254 km/p/h for the price of a good steak dinner),and the area boasts some of the best restaurants in the alps, serving authentic local savoyard specialities.

Sorry i am rambling a bit it seems, but i think the area is a gem.

Thanks Jon, I see what you mean.
My old MD used to bang on about Courchevel, and i asked him why, and he said because they serve damned good champagne there. Needless to say, I have given the place a wide berth.

I also dont fancy Val d'Isere just because so many people say how spiffing it is old chap - not interested.
Sadly, Zermatt has similar snob value from what I have heard, but the skiing looks excellent, so I am keen to give it a go. I also heard that Cortina and Madonna in Italy are full of people who just want to be seen there.

Sorry for sounding a bit lost here, but as much as I like to try and look good at all times, I dont understand why you would go somewhere JUST to look good. It kind of defeats the object of a ski holiday to me!

Amyway, my sons mate has just come back from Les Arcs for a 3rd time, and they swear by the place, so I am off to have a chat with them, because there are some good deals to be had there.

Thanks.

Zermatt's a mountaineering town and has been for hundreds of years, I'm not sure it's quite accurate to lump it in with some large French stations.

What was it you didn't like about Zermatt?
