You make a fair point though Ise, its only a low-level recommendation and I for one wouldn't be in a hurry to go to Les Gets. Obviously some folk love it...

The reasons you'd pick somewhere to work for a season are a bit different to ones you'd use to pick a holiday destination. It's why, for example, someone might choose to go to London to find work rather than an uninhabited island in the South Pacific.

Since the presentation, my son has pursued the point, and it would appear that the general view among the climbing fraternity, is that if you don't get back safely, it doesn't count. Seems a trifle harsh, but that is the view.

Mortlock talks about this in his book "The Adventure Alternative", he distinguishes between adventure and misadventure and talks about outcomes but preparation is equally important. It's recognised that not being suitably equipped or prepared can lead to misadventure and a number of inquiries following incidents have highlighted the need to ensure your group is suitably equipped and prepared for the challenge. Generally those who ignore this and take themselves or others into the mountains without suitable preparation or equipment are recognised for the reckless behaviour they exhibit.

Just in case you were suggesting my friend was making this up, he wasnt, its true. I am sure there are people who might make up stories on t'internet though. The buggers.

I was suggesting the recommendation of someone I don't know isn't worth a lot. Obviously someone might like something but it's meaningless without context, for example people I don't know must be buying James Blunt records but he's still rubbish, in the context that it's his mum and tone deaf people I'm better able to judge it as a recommendation.

Three things, anyone who claims to be in the SAS isn't, given that he's a liar why should we believe he knows anything about Les Gets? And he certainly didn't invent skiing in his lunchtime, I mean it would have taken until teatime at least.

Now Les on the other hand, he may have invented skiing, who knows? I'll certainly buy him a pint if he did.

very good points, I'll be much more careful about believing what people I don't know tell me in future :D although it's a bombshell that people might make stuff up of course, thank goodness that doesn't happen on the internet though :)

Reminds me of the debate befor the Iraq invasion. The last eight years have been insane. The crazy thing is that just as it was with the war, so many here have no clue about the reality of this economy. Few believe that this is going to be bad for years, not months.

I'd not thought of that but the tone was similar now you mention it. Let's hope that the ultimate expression of that sort of empty headed discourse was Sarah Palin and things can only improve. Both situations are good example of the sort of trouble that you can get into when what you believe becomes more important than actual facts

It's the way the other people jeer at him that got me, I've been in meetings and worked with people who behave like that. Mrs Ise asked me what the guy was up to now as he'd been right all along and I guessed they'd run him out of town, they obviously didn't like him to start with so they'll loathe him now.

It's all self catered apt or hotels... :-( not ideal for ma wee pistepals.

anyone know any better?

you're correct, there's a variety of reasons for that, mostly it's really only a British thing so there's not a general European demand. Some places have allowed chalet operations, Verbier and Zermatt being the biggest two names.

Yes it does seem a shame but then again I suppose it all comes down to taste. :-)

I think you find it comes down to perception, there's nothing in an Austrian Xmas dinner that's alien to the British palate.
