I must say I've always quite fancied Zinal, I will get there one day

it's not going to appeal to everyone, you've got to understand our way of life before coming or you could be a bit disappointed.

The lift system I used was certainly not awful. If you go to any resort at peak times expect to queue. I went first week of January 08 and never had a problem with queues and that was including getting over to Wengen to watch the Lauberhorn downhill racing.

I said waiting for trains which is still the main way to get around Grindelwald and Wengen of course unless you stick to a handful of runs at the top. It's like commuting and I'd work if I wanted to do that :D I've never skied First which actually looks quite good though.

Restaurants at Christmas

it seems a shame to travel and not try local customs, the main meal in Austria would be Xmas eve and you might find a local hotel to book a table at. I've had some pretty amazing Christmas meals in Austra over the years personally although some have been pretty epic )

My gf's work colleague has just left his job to work the season in Les Gets. He's holidayed there and absolutely loved it - was dying to go back on the strength of good skiing and great apres.

A decent enough endorsment?

Have a good one. )

and I once met a bloke in the pub who not only said he'd been in the SAS but that Les Gets wasn't too special and he'd actually invented skiing one lunchtime )

and that, in a nutshell, is a the problem with Grindelwald et al, stunning views of mountains you're not actually on. That begs the question if it would be worthwhile without those views and for a lot of people it's just not. While for Zermatt you could transport the skiing anywhere and it would still be worth going. The lift system is awful as well, huge chunks of your day lost waiting for trains or being on them. It' probably still worth going once but there's really so many better places to ski.

I do like the photo of the Lac and the Dam. Very striking with the snow against the water.

Interesting it's not frozen so far, the summer temperature is around 8'c which is pretty cold for the summer but it takes a fair time to cool down further in the winter. Hopefully if it does snow the commune will recall they're supposed to clear our track this week.
