What age to start?

yes I think if you can - it is a good idea to start early but slowly. If you visit the mountains regularly or live there, the ideal situation is just to introduce kid as young as 3 to the feeling of having skis on. Even if it is just for an hour once a week, it will make the feeling less alien when they start in earnest at 6 or 7
Should I take a lesson?

If you don't take lessons, you will improve to a certain standard and enjoy it - but you will reach a plateau before long. Taking a lesson, ideally one in a small group from a high standard instructor, will teach how to ski properly. In time, this will allow you to tackle more technical terrain, deep snow and all the stuff that is really fun. You will not regret it.
Avalanche Book Reviews

Another fantastic book on general mountain skills is "Freedom of the Hills"

It provides a thorough knowledge base for all types of climbing, mountain safety and some references to avalanche safety and ski touring.
There was a fairly large avalanche on (or just below) the north face of rendl 2 days ago. My friend, who lives there, watched the whole thing from his balcony in the village above the funky chicken. It is the same place where 2 scandinavian kids were killed a few weeks ago. The conditions in st anton are very unstable with no real bonding between the snow. There is no real solid baser and the warm weather has obviously been a nightmare. if you are heading out to St Anton - be careful - it may be best to save those off piste runs for next year.
Tignes is probably as good a bet as anywhere - check out some snow reports.

Sorry Fiona,
To answer your question- conditions should be great even in March/ April- there is a very deep snowpack already and things should contiunue well for the next month anyway. Even if it didn't snow much more- you'll be fine - enjoy!
