Here's a link to the dry slope in Kilternan:
http://skiclub.ie/ I see they now do a one-day beginner clinic that could be good (skis and boots are provided). Mind you - be sure to remind your m-i-l that its much more fun on snow  |

I hate it when you have people who push up between your skis when clearly there is nowhere to go. Can be useful to plant your poles into the snow directly in front of their skis. If subtly done, it prevents further progress by them without obviously looking for trouble

...... if its the first morning, get out of bed and rush over the window to check weather conditions....
.... briefly wonder, why is it so dark :?: .... realise its still only 5am and I have to wait another couple of hours to get up  Its like Christmas morning all over again - not being able to sleep because of the excitement. You would think at my age, I would have outgrown such behaviour  |

This used to happen to me a lot but then I found that if I logged in then opened the message and then hit the refresh button, it usually gave me the option of posting a reply. |

I would be with Paul on this one. It will take her at least a week to really get going and she will probably not be competent or confident enough to ski on her own on anything other than the most basic beginners slopes. Have a good luck around the ski schools and see who has the most suitable option - ideally, a class with at least a few "more mature" students. If you can find one, she will enjoy learning with the group and will not feel under pressure to keep up with you or feel she is holding you back. This will also leave you free to enjoy the mountain at your own pace. You can, and should, arrange to meet with her regularly, for lunch and/or end of class. If you want to give her a nice Xmas present, book her a massage for the middle of the week  Hope it works out and don't pay any attention to any m-in-l jokes that may follow [Tony - behave ] |

I think it is agreed - all us ski-obsessives look out the window to see what conditions will be like for the day.
Now the question is what is your reaction to what you see. Here is my list rated on a scale of 1 - 10 with 1 being despair that I might not get any skiing in while 10 is skiing heaven, perfect blue skies with a lovely dump of fresh snow!: Rain  - 2: not good but on the plus side maybe it means there is fresh snow up higher  Thick Fog  - 1: oh no  not good at all - scour the sky for any sign of a break; High wind 3: which lifts will be open? links to adjoining valleys will probably be closed, it will be cold, cold, cold :x; Falling Snow 6: its going to be good .... but what are skiing conditions going to be like until it stops?; Overcast skies 6: could go either way - does it mean a storm coming in with lovely fresh snow? will it blow over? will it be cold? Blue skies 7 if it has now snowed for a while  9 if it snowed yesterday   10 if it snowed during the night:lol:   Have I missed any or got the ratings wrong? |
