...but very funny seeing their faces when they ask you how much you paid and it was half what they did!!!

Wouldn't it be considered a rude question to ask - like asking someone you just met how much they make per year? :)

one word: Chamonix. I can't believe people mention 3V ... Do not go to Zermatt, or 3V or elsewhere as they are miles away.

Err Tony_H said it would be a struggle to find resorts open that late...I knew Val T was, so suggested it....and yes I said "BUT 2.5-3 hrs "

And why not mention it? VT pretty much all above 2000m+, 150 km of runs (80 pistes).

What about Chamonix? 1000m+, 108 km of runs(69 pistes).

Just give the facts as they are, add things to the pot - fine (Chamonix if you think its the bee's knees) and let people look & choose...Why shoot others down and argue that your opinion is the only one?

I don't know what's the bee's knees, just know what is the closest place to Geneva for good skiing and this was the question, 3 hours away is definitely not close. But you can take a day trip to Chamonix and be back in Geneva before dinner time so the first one that comes to mind. In my experience resorts (unless they are really low) still open mid April so this is not the question of being open, particularly with this season snow. There is a choice for people willing to travel long but it narrows when you are short of time. The altitude of the town is not important as long as mountains are high enough to hold snow.

Well, no one knows what the weather will be like in 10 days and snow conditions will depend on it. Spring skiing is very likely.

Touring skis.
98mm underfoot
21m radius

Wholly unsuitable. But thanks.

Depends on what you want from a ski with an All Terrain Rocker I suppose...

Better stick with the piste skis.

Its a powder ski Bandit. I don't want a powder ski. And I don't want piste skis either. As well you know

5/15 (5mm over 15cm) Rocker doesn't really make it a powder ski. The bend is too small and combined with moderate waist it's really an all-mountain ski. The tip will go over the mank, but I would want bigger rocker on a powder day at this width. They are also heavy. I generally find that K2 make heavy skis. My friend skis Obseths and while they are comparable to my JJ's in dimensions they feel like tanks.

98 is quite modest by today's standard and for powder days people now get out their really fat boards. 98 is actually not bad for an all-rounder. You can do more research and don't be confused by the TR - off-piste it is pretty much irrelevant, you actually want less sidecut. For the piste 21m is still reasonable, it probably won't be the most maneuverable ski you could find, but unless they are silly stiff they should be fine. I find that you can do shorter turns with longer radius skis but not the other way around. But they sound quite heavy for a touring ski, my JJ's are lighter at 175 while being almost 20 mm fatter. For touring something like Atomic Access/Atomic Charter will be way better and won't feel like tanks on feet even with Dukes (actually Tony can do with Barons). But if you don't want 100mm waist (quite versatile IMHO) then look into those Bushwackers, Tony, they may fit your bill better. Also, all-mountain/freeride/touring and telemark categories are not always accurately represented at conrad, so don't let this confuse you. If the ski is labelled as touring it doesn't mean you can't ski them elsewhere.

weetimmy wrote:Many thanks all, looks like Chamonix may be the best bet in terms of maximizing time on snow (and what other goal is there?). Verbier Ski Bum, thanks especially for all the detailed info. I'll be bringing my own boots, but don't want to drag my skis along. They're fairly serious GS skis anyway, probably not the best kit for spring skiing in Europe. Any suggestions on where to rent skis for Chamonix, and what might be a good pair to try?

No, sorry, I've never rented. I know there is a rental shop at the bottom of Grands Montets cable car. Check resort website, you may find more info, maybe even reserve a pair for your dates. As for skis to try, if it's spring snow you can probably do well with some fatter (85-100mm) rockered skis, there are tens and tens around, so ask in the shop.

Low Cost??? I am flying to London in May and because my dates fall on bank holiday the cheapest "budget" EasyJet could offer was about 360 Swiss francs return - before any extras. No thanks, I will fly for 200 with Swiss and will check my bag free and land in City instead of end of the world and will get better service and won't have to be up at silly hours to make the flight. I haven't tried any other and have no intention to. Travel is stressful as is to add more stress. Regular airline for me any time. It was the same last year when we had a group trip to Amsterdam for a DJ - paid almost twice as less for KLM than we found tickets for the same dates with Sleezy Jet. I think the popularity of EasyJet is due to the fact that they pose themselves as "budget" which attracts many people who don't even search any further. Apart from couple trips to Madrid every time I travelled I found better rates with regular airlines. And I know from friends in aviation industry in case of strikes or any other issues it's regular airlines that get served first. In Madrid we got stuck for 4 hours because of the strike and they didn't even let us leave the plane. So we were just sitting there watching how Swiss took off with almost no delay. I would be more than happy to pay the difference to be on that flight.
