French Air Traffic Controller Strike
Started by User in France, 3 Replies
French ATCs have gone on strike today . The reports I am finding on the web are unclear about whether it is for 4 or 5 days. Given that I am due to travel out on Saturday, this is pretty critical :x

I really do not want to be sitting around for ever on Saturday instead of getting to resort (Flaine)on time.

Anybody know any more about this? Can I expect this to disrupt flights to Geneva? Any hope of settlement in the meantime?

Watching now. Exciting stuff. I've skied a small boarder cross course in the past - nothing like as fast or as furious as these guys and that was with nobody else on the course

Taking on those jumps and turns with 3 other skiers is only for the bravest

I was curious about some of the guys wearing helmet cams as well - I know the "drag" effect would be minimal but at this level of competition, every edge is sought. Also, they all seem to be wearing fairly standard boarder gear, i.e. baggy. I am surprised that they do not go for aerodynamic gear like the other disciplines. Anyobdy know why?

But I have a question...........Why was gold called after the 31st skier when there was so many more skiing the downhill? This may be a stupid question but i'm curious to know. I live in Ireland and can't use bbc's iplayer, can only watch what's shown on bbc 2

There is live action available on the web in Ireland via www.eurovisionsport.tv (I think). If thats not it, I think you should be able to pick it up from the official Olympics website. I was able to watch lots of live action last night including the boarder cross which was very exciting. Only caught the downhill later on - very impressive win by Defago. Interesting to see the older guys doing well.

That's it Wanderer, that's what I want to do. How did you hold the digi camera?
Its not a patch on the other powder one - wow, I would so love to be able to ski like that :x

Glad you liked my effort Dave. It was really simple - held my poles in one hand and held the camera in my other hand facing forward and, as best I could, level as I attempted to ski the slalom course at a reasonably fast pace

Getting to Worgl from Munich Airport

Just wondering whether there is any merit in taking the train only as far as Kufstein and taking a taxi from there?

Not sure its any real advantage but perhaps somebody more knowledgeable will comment.
You would think that an organisation as big as the Olympics could sort out their arrangements! Not so - the Irish 2-Woman Bobsleigh team slogged their way through the qualification process and made the last (20th)qualification spot. No mean achievement when you consider the quality and availability of bobsleigh tracks in Ireland, i.e. NONE!

So well done and pack your bags - you're heading for Whistler. But not so fast, the Austrian team pull out and Japan the next team in the qualification rankings are invited to replace them. So technically Ireland are now 19th of the 20 qualifiers. Up steps Australia who failed to qualify. They raise objections within the past week on the basis that all Continents apart from Australasia are represented and that this is contrary to the Olympic charter - they argue, strongly, that as Europe is overepresented, the lowest ranking European team, i.e. Ireland, should be turfed out to make room for them! The matter is referred to the International Court of Arbitration. Thankfully, they decide that Ireland should remain in the competition but allow Australia to be added to the list of starters.

At this stage, you would think the Irish team could relax and prepare for the biggest sporting event of their lives and before you snigger consider whether you would be prepared to hurl down the track at speeds of over 140kph!

But no, now the Brazilians, another famous Bobsleighing nation, decide that they have a grievance and lodge a complaint literally a couple of days before the Olympics is due to start. They are also seeking the elimination to the Irish to make room for them (don't know what we have done to offend all these great bobsleighing nations). And so, the Irish girls must wait another few days to be sure that their Olympic dream is not shattered.

Not the ideal way to prepare for a major sporting event but certainly no way to run a sport!
