I have one more question, when I mentioned in the office when I was going there was a sharp intake of breath, and the words 'french half term' uttered..........
Will this area be that bad over this time, it will be the week before the UK half term starts?

take a look at http://about-france.com/school-holidays.htm

it's not just France, most of Europe has holidays in Feb., it can't be helped if you've got kids I guess  It wouldn't be my first choice of a time to ski and I try to avoid the crowds if I can.

I think so, from a non-pilot point of view you can see why, it's the same approach more or less.

In the past that's been why not so many airlines go there, pilots require special rating and/or additional training. There's a handful of other airports around the Alps with the same requirements.

Bullfinch wrote:Hi.
I've been skiing for the last 5 years & have always hired skis, but I have a female friend selling some Salomon Crossmax 07 skis that she was sold as womens skis. I've tried Crossmax before & they're a good ski. My question is what is the difference between the mens version & the womens? Is there a difference or would it be ok to buy & use these skis?

Thanks in advance, Andy :)

In the past it's mostly been pink paint for women and that's been the difference, recently the companies have been fairly candid about their past sins to promote new properly designed women skis.

Having a lower centre of gravity for women has some interesting effects on turning a ski, it's actually slightly easier for a women and some skis are designed with this built-in . Taking any ski off the shelf then a women would tend to do better on a softer ski with the bindings a bit further forward while at an expert level that's less true.

Mostly the same construction is used for men and women skis and for a lot of recreational skis that's a foam core which will not perform well over time, if you overuse or overpower any foam core ski it's going to degrade and it's not any particular issue for women skis.

So, a womens version of the crossmax is likely to be a softer version of the mens skis with the bindings a bit further forward which probably won't work for you.

Personally I don't need an exhuastive study to prove the extent of inteference between each model of mobile and each model of beacon - its a lot safer to simply switch the mobile off when you leave the piste - who wants to field phonecalls while skiing powder anyway?

I purposely avoided quoting some lengthy technical information as there seems to be a problem that it's misunderstood, misquoted or quoted out of context. That said, if you read what you actually copied from PH in it's entirety you'll see it says what I pointed out, ie there is no evidence that the proximity of a mobile phone to a victims transceiver has any effect on the searchers device.

Current thinking suggests for search protocols we should attempt to turn off any extra devices in the vicinity.

That statement (above) is wrong while this statement (below) is entirely correct :

Actually, there's no evidence that a victim's mobile phone interferes with a searchers transceiver.

And to reiterate, if you have a mobile phone on it will not stop you being located by a searcher.

Last words to Bernard GIRAUDON, who you already quoted saying just that :

It is important to note that a transmitting beacon is unaffected so a mobile phone on a victim should not cause any problems.

Nagrjuna wrote:You mention a mobile phone is essential - as is a beacon.

However it should be noted that the mobile phone should be OFF until needed. If you have a mobile and beacon that are both on at the same time the mobile interferes with the flux lines the beacon sends out and makes pinpointing you almost impossible.

Before heading off piste everyone in the part should not only check their beacon is transmitting - but also that their mobile phones are switched off too. Otherwsie you might as well not be wearing the beacon!

Actually, there's no evidence that a victim's mobile phone interferes with a searchers transceiver.

Brucie wrote:I find that an offensive and ignorant allegation. I'm sorry you feel so sensitive and insecure that a light hearted remark affects you so.

If anyone else agrees with Tony on this I would apologise most sincerely for any hurt or distress caused by my innocent remark.

I was merely suggesting that thefts seem to happen more to English people.

you're right though, I don't know what it is that's going on but that does seem to be the case. Some of the police in ski stations think it's an insurance scam which may well be unfair which leads to a guess that in some way English are attracting theft either with carelessness or they're a good target with all the new flash kit  I reckon I could lose my skis pretty quick, a couple of weeks either in Villars, Hte Nendaz or Verbier and they'd be gone but at home I leave them outside the chalet and wouldn't ever lock them.
