J2Ski Snow Report 7th November 2019

Snow in the Pyrenees, picture courtesy of Baqueira Beret...

Big snows arrived in Europe this week, with more ski areas opening in North America.

The Snow Headlines - 7th November
- Big snowfalls in the Alps, Dolomites and Pyrenees.
- Number of ski areas open in North America into double figures.
- Snowfall since Saturday over 1metre at several open Alpine glaciers.
- Killington is first area to open in the Eastern US.
- More than 50 ski areas in Europe and North America open by this coming weekend; Andermatt, Verbier, Breckenridge, Copper, Marmot Basin, Mammoth, Trysil ...

There's excitement in the Alps, Dolomites and Pyrenees this week after the first major snowstorm of the Autumn transformed snow cover on higher slopes across a large swathe of Western Europe.

A big storm system that moved up Europe's west coast, named Amelie in France, deposited 30-60cm of snow on slopes at many ski areas, with totals now over a metre at some higher resorts.

Base depths have also moved beyond the metre mark on a number of European glaciers. Several had been struggling to stay open with just 20-30cm bases since the big summer thaw so this is the first time bases have really moved in the right direction for five or six months.

For the 15 or so areas already open in the Alps it has meant great powder skiing once the sun returned, and for others due to open in the next few weeks, including those without the added security of glacier slopes, it means that they're building a decent base now ahead of the season.

We don't want to count our chickens but it's continuing to look pretty good for the immediate future with more heavy snowfall in the forecast coming into the weekend.

Against that snowy scene, there haven't actually been many new openings in the past week in Europe; just a couple in Scandinavia with several Swiss areas that had previously planned to open, waiting until this snow arrived. Things should start to pick up speed from this weekend onward as more ski areas open.

There's not been much fresh snow in North America, after the record-breaking October snowfalls in the Rockies, but the number of areas open has more than tripled from five to 17. More areas are opening after the October snow in the west and temperatures are dropping to allow the first ski areas in the east and Midwest to open after some fast snow-making.

In the Alpine Forecast

Did someone order snow for the weekend?

Temperatures forecast to stay at or below seasonal averages for the foreseeable, with heavy snow on the cards for some areas this weekend AND another major snow event shaping up for next week... keep watching J2Ski!

EUROPEAN ALPS
Austria
Austria continues to have more than half of the ski areas open in the alps at present and a 10th, Turracherhohe down in Carinthia, is due to join them this weekend.

The past week has been a real mix of conditions on the glaciers, closed one day in blizzard conditions with strong winds and the heavy snow, then the next it blows through and there's blue sky and perfect fresh snow. Then repeat. Two areas, Hintertux and Stubai, have had more than a metre of snow since Saturday and there's more in the forecast.

France
Although there's still only Tignes open in France, the country's slopes have seen some of the biggest snowfalls of the last week, really great news ahead of the start of the season.

Tignes has seen its conditions transformed and gone from having marginal snow cover that prevented it opening for three weeks last month to now reporting 1.8 metres (six feet) at the top of the Grande Motte glacier after 95cm (over three feet) of fresh snow to date, with more forecast.

Other French resorts aiming to open in late November or early December are looking good. Alpe d'Huez and Val Thorens, the latter due to open in just over a fortnight, had reported more than 80cm of snow by Tuesday evening.

Italy
Italy has seen its share of fresh snowfall too, heaviest in the west of the country, but Livigno reported more than two feet (60cm) of snowfall and further east into the Dolomites 20-40cm accumulations were reported. As nowhere is open there yet, not many are making measurements. However, conditions are greatly improved at the two open areas, Cervinia and Val Senales.

Two more areas look set to join them this weekend, Sulda in the south Tyrol and a third glacier area, Presena, near Ponte di Legno.

Switzerland
Swiss ski slopes have also been transformed, with yet-to-open resorts like St.Moritz posting images of deep snow in resort streets at the weekend. That said St Moritz DOES lay claim to one of the four Swiss glacier areas that are open, Diavolezza, which reported 40cm of fresh snowfall from the weekend storms and more since, plus more of the way.

Engelberg, Saas Fee and Zermatt are the other three Swiss areas open so far.

Andermatt, Laax and Verbier had delayed possible October openings due to inadequate snow cover. That has now changed and Andermatt say they'll be the fifth area to open, this coming weekend, with their Gemsstock slopes opening, however, Laax reported on Wednesday they would delay a further week as they are not liking the look of the stormy forecast for the coming weekend there.

Verbier have confirmed that they will open this coming Saturday (9th November).

Scandinavia
There are half a dozen ski areas open in Norway, Sweden and Finland with the number due to hit double figures this weekend. There have been no big snowfalls here but it has stayed cold, mostly, so snow-making systems have been going full blast to build bases and what's already there isn't thawing.

There has been a little fresh snowfall through the week too, but mostly in the 5-10cm range in total.

Beitostolen, Bjorli, Kvitfjell and Trysil are due to open in Norway this weekend along with Hemavan in Sweden. Areas that have been open a while already including Ruka and Levi (the next stop on the World cup tour in a few weeks) in Finland are constantly expanding the amount of terrain they have open now.

Pyrenees
The Pyrenees have had a healthy dump of snow from the recent storms with resorts on the French and Spanish sides as well as Andorra in the middle posting 20-40cm accumulations where they measured what has fallen.

Nowhere is open there yet but the snow is good news for when most plan to open in about three weeks.

One area that may open (it did on November 1st last year after a big end of October snowfall in 2018), Alp 2500 - shared by Masella and La Molina ski areas in Spain - looks like it might open this weekend, but there's been no confirmation as yet.

Scotland
Scotland is already showing signs of its usual roller-coaster weather patterns after snow cover from late October and early November was largely wiped out following a 20-degree jump in temperatures and torrential rain for three days and nights from Saturday to Monday. It's now back to mostly subzero and clear but with rain forecast on Saturday which could fall as snow up high.

Cairngorm has been using their all-weather snow-making system to make some early snow for snow play for visiting families.

Eastern Europe
Eastern Europe too is looking much whiter after fresh snow from the Czech Republic to Turkey (OK, the ski areas in Turkey are officially in Western Asia). Resorts in Bulgaria and Slovenia were amongst those posting their first decent snowfalls of the autumn. There are no reports of any opening so far, however.

North America
Canada
Two more ski areas opened in Canada at the weekend joining Nakiska after it's 'earliest ever opening' on the last weekend of October.

They were two more Banff resorts – the local ski hill of Mt Norquay and the big international resort Lake Louise – the latter opening a week early after good early snowfall conditions. The third Banff ski area, Sunshine, is due to open this weekend along with Marmot Basin near Jasper to the north.

It has got colder and there's even been a little natural snowfall in the East after an unseasonably warm October there but as yet no area is reported to have opened. It seems likely at least one will this weekend though with temperatures staying low and snow guns blasting.

USA
The US saw the biggest jump in numbers of ski areas open in the past week, going from four resorts in two states to 16 centres skiable in seven states at the weekend.

This makes the US the first country with the number of areas open in double figures so far this season. About a third of the new openings, in the Rockies, were due to the great snowfall in the region in October with more areas opening early including Monarch (earliest ever) and Winter Park.

There are now seven Colorado areas open already and it will be at least nine this weekend with Copper and Breckenridge set to join them.

The rest of the areas open have mostly done so thanks to snow-making as temperatures dipped in the East and Midwest. Killington in Vermont is the biggest name to open but Trollhaughen and Tyrol Basin have opened in Wisconsin, Wild Mountain in Minnesota and Cataloochee in North Carolina.

Back west, but also thanks to snow-making, Sipaou has started the 19-20 ski season in New Mexico.

Southern Hemisphere
With the start of meteorological summer less than a month away in the southern hemisphere the main 2019 ski season has been over for almost a month but one area is still opening in November, albeit just one T bar served run and only at weekends if the snow and the weather are good. Whakapapa on Mt Ruapehu in New Zealand reported great conditions last weekend.

It's not looking too shabby is it? Until next week... thanks for reading...
You're in luck - you have mail!
This a subject that's starting to get some attention, so we thought we'd start a discussion here and see what you all think.

Since posting the above, we've heard that Verbier will NOT be opening this coming weekend but is still planning to open next Saturday (9th November) and for the following weekends.

As always, early openings at this time of year, are very fluid and subject to conditions - so check before travelling!
J2Ski Snow Report 31st October 2019

Prepping for the weekend, picture courtesy of Winter Park...

The cold arrives, with new snow in The Alps and more in Colorado.

The Snow Headlines - 31st October
- Several Colorado reports record October snowfall ahead of opening.
- 2019/2020 World Cup ski tour underway.
- Scandinavia looking snowy.
- Canada and Japan's 2019-20 ski seasons get started.
- Fresh snowfall in the Pyrenees.
- Four more Colorado ski areas to open early for the season this weekend.

Winter and the full ski season edge closer, with temperatures dipping, days shortening and snow falling (as well as snow guns firing) in most of the mountainous regions of the northern hemisphere.

The number of ski areas with their lifts spinning for 19-20 passed 20 last week and should exceed 30 this coming weekend; with Norway and the USA both seeing at least three areas opening (four in the US including Winter Park in Colorado) and more new openings in Switzerland (Verbier - at weekends through November) and Canada (Banff's Mt Norquay and Lake Louise).

The snowiest conditions to date look to be in the Rockies, where a number of resorts have posted their snowiest Octobers ever (1.5 metres/5 feet at soon-to-open Steamboat) and parts of Scandinavia, but there was fresh snow down to the valley floor in Austria on Wednesday.

As usual, it's not perfect everywhere. We're getting slightly mixed-message from the Alps where some resorts say it's great, others, including Andermatt, Les 2 Alpes and (still undecided) Laax all delaying opening as there's too little snow as yet.

They've also been wringing their hands on North America's East coast where the usual October openings thanks to snow-making have been thwarted by warm weather.

The northern hemisphere's summer ski areas Passo Stelvio, Italy and Galdhopiggen (in Norway) that have both been open since last spring closed last weekend or will close this weekend respectively.

In the southern hemisphere just two ski areas remain open, in Chile and New Zealand, and will be down to just one, opening weekends only in November in New Zealand, as of next week.

In the Alpine Forecast

Snow coming for the French Alps this week...

It's currently very cold in the East (of the Alps), and snowing, but temperatures will moderate to seasonal averages over the weekend before some heavy snow early next week.

Further West, and to the North of the Alps, significant snowfall (down to mid-mountain at least) is forecast for the next week.

Re-publication :- our Snow Report Summary, being the text above this line, is free to re-publish, but must be clearly credited to www.J2ski.com with text including "J2Ski Snow Report" linked to this page - thank you.

EUROPEAN ALPS
Austria
Excitement has been building in Austria over the past 48 hours as there's been snow down to the valley floor in many areas for the first time this Autumn.

Nine ski areas are currently open, mostly in Tirol and mostly, but not all, glaciers, with the biggest chunks of terrain (20-30km) available at the Stubai, Hintertux and Solden glaciers.

The latter staged the first World Cup Alpine ski races of 2019-20 at the weekend, which in the case of the men's race was the first time for three years after bad weather cancelled the past two. However, it was the women's race that grabbed the headlines with an unexpected win for a new 17-year-old New Zealand racer. She is just back home now in New Zealand to complete her schooling this week we're told.

There are no new openings expected in Austria over the coming week but the already-open-for-cross-country-skiers Dachstein Glacier will open its alpine slopes this weekend.

France
Ski conditions on the Grande Motte may be limited but were described as "excellent" after a little fresh snow last week. There's currently no other area open in France or any expected to be for nearly four weeks until Val Thorens opens on 23rd/24th November.

Les 2 Alpes, which had hoped to open its glacier for a preview snowsports week this week, has decided not to.

Italy
Italy's Passo Stelvio summer ski area ended its six-month 2019 run last weekend but was immediately replaced by Cervinia opening up for winter 2019-20 there.

The only other Italian area currently open is the Val Senales glacier where 4km of trails are skiable.

Switzerland
A mixed picture in Switzerland with Verbier announcing it will be open weekends in November but Andermatt saying it is delaying its planned early opening of its Gemstock slopes due to inadequate snow cover up high.

Laax had already postponed opening last weekend and there's no sign yet it will open this weekend.

Four Swiss areas are open already – Saas-Fee, Engelberg, Zermatt and the Diavolezza glacier in the Engadin Valley, sometimes referred to as the third St. Moritz ski area although it is some distance away.

Scandinavia
Norway's winter is due to get going this weekend with Beitostølen planning to open. At the same time, as mentioned in our intro, the country's remaining still-open-for-2019-summer ski area, Galdhopiggen, will end its 2019 operations on Sunday.

Elsewhere Ruka and Levi remain open in Finland as well as Idfre Fjall and Kåbdalis in Sweden (the latter opening last weekend).

Pyrenees
After snowy weather last week which saw the tops of the Pyrenees turn white and top-to-bottom coverage at Sierra Nevada in southern Spain, the weather has warmed a little with dry sunny days. However, it has not got too warm on the mountain tops which have stayed white. More pre-season snowfall is possible early next week.

Scotland
It has been another cold week on Scottish hills with the tops of the country's mountains staying white for a second week and frosts each morning. More ski areas have been testing their all-weather snow-making systems with Cairngorm running their TechnoAlpin SnowFactory machine this week after it proved temperamental and didn't work for much of last winter. There's a possible blip this weekend with warmer temperatures and rain forecast but temperatures should dip again next week.

Eastern Europe
There's nowhere known to be open in Eastern Europe as yet. Temperatures are around freezing on mountain tops in the Balkans however and we're forecasting 15cm of snowfall up high at Bansko by the weekend with rain at lower elevations.

North America
Canada
Canada's ski season got underway last weekend with Nakiska opening a couple of miles of piste made up of machine-made and natural snowfall. It was their earliest ever opening and although now closed midweek they'll be re-opening at the weekend too.

Next to open will be Mt Norquay, Banff's local hill, on Friday, November 1st. It reports plenty of natural snow cover already, topped up with machine snow too.

It's larger neighbour Sunshine plans to open a week later on the 8th.

Stop Press - We've just heard that Lake Louise should open this weekend.

So far nowhere in the East has been able to open as it has been too warm for snow-making. Another warm weekend is forecast but it should get cooler next week.

USA
The race to open more ski areas is well underway in the US where two more areas opened in the west of the country last weekend and the first ski resort in the Midwest joined them on Tuesday.

That means five areas have opened and as many again look set to open over the next few days too.

As usual for this time of year, the early-openers are using either cold weather for snow-making in order to open – as has been the case for Mt Rose by Lake Tahoe in Nevada and the first to open in the Midwest, Wild Mountain in Minnesota, with several others in the region following suit this weekend.

Resorts opening in Colorado, including Loveland last weekend, joining Arapahoe Basin and Keystone, have been able to do so thanks mostly to early natural snowfall. Four more ski areas in the state; Eldora, Monarch, Winter Park and Wolf Creek, plan to open over the next few days.

For Monarch, the opening is the earliest in 50 years and three weeks earlier than planned. Steamboat, one of the big names opening early next month, has had more than 1.5 metres of October snowfall, almost half-as-much again as their previous record total for the month.

Elsewhere, Brighton has been teasing a "big announcement" on Friday with pictures of deep fresh snowfall there so it's not yet known if they'll open too, the first in Utah.

Some East Coast resorts that had aimed to open in October, like Killington and Sunday River, look like they may open in the next week too, having been thwarted by unusually warm temperatures slowing their snow-making this month. It's got colder now though.

Southern Hemisphere
The 2019 season is almost over in the Southern hemisphere with the last resort that was still open daily, Turoa in New Zealand, calling it a day on Sunday. Corralco in Chile is reported to be still open though, with some fresh snowfall on Tuesday, but this coming weekend will be their last of the season too.

However, Turoa's neighbouring resort on Mt Ruapehu, Whakapapa, will re-open one lift for weekends in November, if the weather is good, for more snowsport in the final month of the southern hemisphere's meteorological spring. The snow is still more than 2.5 metres deep there.

Until next week, enjoy the webcams!

J2Ski Snow Report 24th October 2019

A snow cannon at work in Cervinia, Italy, opening this weekend...

Another few ski areas open as cold returns to the forecast...

The Snow Headlines - 24th October
- French ski season gets underway at Tignes, but Les 2 Alpes cancels October opening.
- Swedish 2019-20 ski season gets underway.
- First significant snowfall for Eastern North America.
- Season starts this coming weekend in Canada.
- Livigno uses snow farming to open cross-country ski trails.
- More US resorts opening this weekend.
- Southern Hemisphere's 2019 ski season continues at one last area, weekends only.

We are back above 20 ski areas open in the northern hemisphere now with the ski season opening in France and Sweden for 2019-20 in the past week. Resorts opened in Europe too, including Kitzbuhel, claiming to be the first in the Alps to open without a glacier.

There has been more snow up high across the Alps to raise spirits ahead of the main season as the snowline gradually moves down the mountains.

As well as coming to higher altitudes, it is also moving from higher latitudes with resorts in Lapland and Northern Scandinavia (already open thanks to snow farming), turning decidedly wintry last weekend thanks to heavy snowfall.

Across the Atlantic, there has been more snow too in the Northwest of North America and for the first time this autumn in the East too, although no more resorts have yet opened. Canada's 19-20 ski season is expected to start this Saturday.

In the Alpine Forecast

Snow coming to the highest slopes of Italy...

It's currently very mild in the Alps and that looks set to last into next week, albeit with some high altitude snow in the meantime. After that, as we approach November, the forecast models are going for cold (and snow). More on that next week, but fingers crossed...

Re-publication :- our Snow Report Summary, being the text above this line, is free to re-publish, but must be clearly credited to www.J2ski.com with text including "J2Ski Snow Report" linked to this page - thank you.

EUROPEAN ALPS
Austria
Austria continues to dominate in terms of the number of ski areas open; now up to a choice of nine resorts with the latest, Kitzbuhel, opening several slopes and about a kilometre of runs on Resterkogel last Saturday thanks to snow farming.

Otherwise, there are eight Austrian glacier ski areas, the biggest so far open being the Piztal, Stubai and Solden with more than 20km each, whilst Hintertux now has more than 30km open. The biggest focus of the week ahead is Solden where the Alpine Skiing World Cup 209-20 season kicks off at the weekend. The FIS has given the race the green light after a course check.

France
The ski season got underway three weeks later than hoped at Tignes on Saturday with the opening of a small area on the Grande Motte glacier - for good skiers only. The move reflected the delayed opening a year ago when access to the glacier slopes was rationed.

Les 2 Alpes was due to open for a nine-day period of glacier skiing from this Saturday but has quietly decided to cancel that, saying they prefer to 'protect the glacier' and have switched to focusing its promotional activity on highlighting the start of the main ski season in November and mountain biking this month.

Italy
The same two ski areas have remained open in Italy the past week as most of the past two months – Passo Stelvio, now in the final fortnight of its six month spring to autumn season, and Val Senales, the former summer ski area now open from early September through to spring.

Both have just a few kilometres of slopes open and the base at Senales, in particular, is reported to be a little thin.

More Italian areas are due to open this coming weekend, however, with Cervinia, as well as Sulden in the Dolomites, both saying they'll open on Saturday (26th) for their 19-20 seasons.

Finally, Livigno has uncovered its huge piles of snow stockpiled from last winter and spread them out around the valley floor to create early cross-country ski trails.

Switzerland
The Diavolezza Glacier near St Moritz in the Engadin region of Switzerland became the country's fourth ski area to open for winter 19-20, on Saturday.

It joins Engelberg, which reported a 30cm snowfall in 24 hours last week, as well as Saas-Fee and Zermatt which have also had plenty of fresh snow in recent days. In fact, Saas-Fee was closed on Saturday due to bad weather.

The next Swiss areas expected to open are the glacier at Laax and the high slopes at Andermatt this weekend.

Scandinavia
Sweden's season got underway last Friday with Idre Fjall using snow farming, the same technique used to open Levi and Ruka in Finnish Lapland earlier this month. After running its lifts free of charge for a period on Friday, natural snow started falling on Friday evening so conditions were great on Saturday with fresh snow to ski on top of the base reconstituted from last spring.

Apart from the three centres using snow farming to open, Norway's Galdhoppigen summer ski area which opened six months ago last spring is into the final week or so it is 2019 season, expected to close on the first Sunday of November.

Pyrenees
There's been more snow on high slopes in the Pyrenees and indeed further south right down to Sierra Nevada, Europe's most southerly major resort. The slopes there turned white again on Sunday after a good snowfall last Saturday.

It currently looks like it will be another month before ski areas in the Pyrenees begin opening although some will be ready to go sooner if there's a lot of snow, as there was here at the end of October last year.

Scotland
Temperatures were sub-zero overnight for much of last week in Scotland, and mountain tops turned white on Sunday morning after precipitation finally met the dry cold front, but so far there's no sign of any centre likely to open early – particularly as there's been no real snowfall and none forecast as yet.

The Lecht was testing its Snow Factory all-weather snow-making system last week however and announced itself ready to open pre-Christmas whatever the conditions thanks to that.

A fourth of the five Scottish Highland commercial centres, Glenshee also announced plans to spend £1m on a large TechnoAlpin Snowfactory unit themselves to ensure some snow cover this winter, also saying they'd open in December regardless as a result.

Eastern Europe
Cold weather again at times in northern ranges like the Tatras brought some snow showers. Further south temperatures have been up towards 20C in resort in Bansko over the past week, although down to single figures on the mountain tops. There's no real sign of things turning wintry there so far though.

North America
Canada
Canada's ski season will kick off on Saturday with Nakiska announcing plans for its earliest ever opening, on October 26th. The Alberta resort is usually in the mix to be one of the first in the country to open, along with ski areas around Banff, a little further west, but this year it has stolen a march by announcing its early opening for a 'preview weekend' well in advance.

Although temperatures have been up in the teens above freezing in recent days the resort says it is confident of opening a few kilometres of runs with snow several feet (60cm) deep on the piste thanks to snow-making efforts and a few natural snowfalls over the past month. After Saturday and Sunday openings at 10am each day, the centre will close midweek.

It's also possible a ski area in Quebec could open this weekend too; Mont Saint Sauveur aims to open some high terrain with snow-making in October each year and says it will open as soon as temperatures are low enough for the cannons to work.

USA
With the race to open first in the US now behind us, things have quietened down a little over the past week here.

There has been more fresh snow on high slopes in the West of the country and fresh snow in Eastern North America too on Thursday/Friday last week – the first measurable falls of the autumn.

Whiteface in New York State reported five inches (12.5cm) at the top of the mountain and Killington said that snow was falling down to its base. Skiers hiked up to ski on the fresh snow at some areas.

However, no other areas have opened yet to join Keystone and Arapahoe Basin, high in the Colorado Rockies, both of which have around 3km of slopes open and bases around the 50cm mark.

Loveland announced on Tuesday that it will be opening for the season this Friday. Mount Rose above Lake Tahoe in California confirmed at the weekend that they also intend to open this Friday, 25th October.

It looks like it should stay snowy in the West but it is still warm in the East so the aim of resorts like Killington and Sunday River to use snow-making may be thwarted for a little while longer.

Southern Hemisphere
With 97% of southern hemisphere ski areas closed over a week ago and all areas in Australia and the Andes closed for snow sports until 2020 we were down to three New Zealand ski areas still open for winter 2019 as of last weekend.

There was fresh snowfall for the final weekend of the season at Cardrona which closed last Sunday.

Mt Ruapehu's Turoa and Whakapapa are still open, however, although this is the last full week for Whakapapa and Turoa just plans to open next weekend for a bit of pond skimming as the area celebrates its 40th birthday. Whakapapa will, however, stay open at weekends through November, so long as conditions are good enough. Running one lift through the final month of the southern hemisphere's spring.

Until next week, thanks for reading...
