Whats in your bag for a weeks skiing?

I think you may have confirmed my thoughts Dave. The risk is different now than it was. The alcohol thread made me wonder. I don't believe that your local in Austria worried about his schnapps consumption before strapping on two splintered planks and heading for his sheep more than "we" do having mulled wine at lunch. We are safer in terms of personal safety now with the advent of protective devices. On the whole, however, given volume and experience of that volume, we are probably less safe.

Ally

in an attempt to bring several threads together this presents an interesting question. Is sliding down a hill safer now in percentage terms than it was say 50 years ago. We all have top line equipment, some have protective gear, we watch what we drink, blah, blah.

Given that, I still guess it's not safer, could be wrong mind.
OMG what shall I do?

Strikes me that you should make the decision quickly and re-arrange the holiday now and in a few days it won't be an issue. The decision is the hardest part, the rest just falls into place after that.

Better to make the wrong decision quickly than make no decision at all.

Dave Mac wrote:I would not recommend Zermatt for a beginner. Walking in skiboots, and carrying skis, when you do not have much experience is a chore that many-timers forget. In Zermatt, walk to the bus, heave the skis on/off, queue/ etc, and the same at the end of the day.

My feeling for beginners is that the environment, from accomodaton to class/slope/lifts carries almost equal importance as the actual slope.

Never considered this as a criteria, probably cos I board so my boots are comfy and I have less to carry!

Was recommending purely on altitude, runs and snow to be honest.

giving up I worse than not starting, not knowing when to give up is worse than failing, and failing is always better than not trying.

Although you will still find me straightlining it these days Tone, I have worked out I can go nearly as fast carving :) however when on steeper incline I resort to type and Wang it down at Mach 17 using the back of the board as a brake rather than a rudder.

Anyway I wear gloves with fingers, my jacket and pants fit and the only words I make up are new ideas for cocktails.

;)

So it's gonna have to be the Hof, start on Blue 8, progress to Red 7 and race Black 17 at the end of the weekend.

Loser pays the hospital fees.
