not spectaular but most predictable:
Few years ago in Pas de la Casa with the lads. Every day we'd go out and ski all over without incident and then on the way down into town (Tubs run) we'd pause on the last ledge to make sure everyone was together and which bar we were heading for. Every day without fail I'd get to said flat, unimpeding bit and fall over as I stopped. Much hilarity from the chaps before heading down for a well earned beer and Flugel in the Underground! |

Hi CherryPicker and welcome!
Budget will have a big effect on where you go - France has a reputation for being expensive. That said in the "where to Ski and Snowboard" resort price index the French resorts come out as avergae (mostly) with US and Swiss resorts much more. I'd say to look at Val D'Isere: not the cheapest but beautiful little town with a great sports centre/swimming pool. Nice hotels/chalets have jacuzzi etc and, best of all, you and yor son will be skiing in on eof the greatest resorts in the world! All of the ski schools speak English (to be honest everyone in VDI does!). Its not the number one choice for beginners as the runs back down into the Village are too hard but you can take the cable car from either main area, my wife learnt to ski in Val and we covered a lot of ground in the afternoons once school was over. For yourself then the Espace Killy (and you can get to Tignes in no time) is an intermediate's paradise. Andy |

None needed - all thoughts gladly welcomed PS Unless they're about the N-word (oops, thought we'd get through a thread without mentioning it  ) |

Andy
I usually book in advance via the web but the staff in Ski Republic are very good and will happily change stuff out as needed. And as for speaking English - I'm going to VDI, who there doesn't ?! ) |

Always nice when someone reinforces your gut feeling - ta!

But I don't have a ski bag so weight would all be in my main hold bag which I'm sure they will check - hence the query about separate boot bags |

Hi All,
I'm off to VDI in January so thoughts turn to hire skis (not worth me buying as I only get to ski once a year) I've hired for the last few years via Ski Republic and they've been excellent so I'll use them again (and they are dirt cheap). My question is which of these that they are offering this year are the best bet for me: Fischer Super Race RC 4 Rossignol Z3 Oversize Rossignol Zenith 76 Fischer Viron 4.4 Salomon X-Wing Tornado Ti I'm an intermediate who's never been off piste and have no real plans to start. Generally I cruise round on reds and blues with a bit of black/moguls when I feel the need for a challenge / the missus wants to get home quick for tea and cakes / Jagermeister. I know these are probably not cutting edge skis but frankly I dont think I'd know the difference! I'm leaning towards the X-Wings for no other reason than that I skiied a pair of X-Wings (what spec I can't remember) in Vermont 3 years ago and loved them as I was happily blasting down their Double Black Diamonds. Useful suggestions / experiences welcomed Andy |
