I'm trying a new camera out and trying to get the best settings for it is proving awkward, today it kept firing the flash when I didn't want it to which is a nuisance.

Not that today was the best photo' day really, it's snowing heavily again and visibility is poor so I was over in Grimentz skiing in the trees a bit.

even in the poor light it was quite good in trees and the snow cover is good down to the village so it was good fun.

One run I like a lot starts a bit higher and I went to have a look at that, the top's a bit exposed but generally OK. There was a group of lads skiing across in front of me and it was pretty obvious they were going to be slow and mess around which is a risk so I cut a slightly different line to normal and ended up near what should have been a small rollover slope. Rollovers are a bit critical so I'd armed my ABS bag in case the slope failed. The wind yesterday is probably the biggest factor effecting slopes today along with the snow fall of course and this rollover had formed a cornice.

Tracking back along the lip wasn't really an option and I was aware the youths were still above me so I decided to jump in. The cornice failed as my leading ski was about a metre from the lip and the slab above and below the lip detached at the same time. The slab was pretty small and pushed me towards a small terrain trap under the rollover with the cornice debris coming in behind me. I was just about to fire the ABS and had discarded my poles and skis when I came to halt, luckily pretty much in arms reach of the kit so I was able to grab my gear and take a couple of poor photo's of the debris.

After a quick lunch some more fun in the trees:

Transferring weight

So central to skiing effectively!

First most skiers think you ski on two skis! Wrong! You ski on one ski,,one edge and constantly shift from one ski to other ski! That is weigth transfer!

if you did that the unweighted ski would fly about and be deflected by the tiniest alteration in surface or terrain. It would also be mechanically inefficient to transfer all the weight in one movement, in fact it would be very difficult to even do.

The proportion you unweight or balance the weight will vary on terrain, extremely 50/50 but commonly around 80/20 or 90/10
Minor(?) knee injury

deadkenny wrote:Cheers. I may go for an appointment then. Only thing is it does seem to be getting better and often it's not hurting at all, and when it does it's more of a minor ache now. I know if I go it'll be feeling fine.

My main concern is if it's "not quite right" and I do some exercise at some point that makes it worse. I do a fair bit of mountain biking now in particular, though it's been fine so far doing that.

If you cycle a lot it tends to build muscle groups that can mask some knee problems, if the cycling is not giving pain then continue. But if you've pain from a fall 6 weeks previously then you really need to see a doctor, you're beyond the time simple bruising will last. It may well be that it's on the mend now but it's worth getting it looked at. I'd have been in within a week or 10 days personally.

OMG  I thought I purchased some mid fats last year....and really with an 86 waist they are full fat )

No wonder my skiing has come on in leaps and bounds 8)

As much as I could make any sense of it then they are mid fat, it's just they can't be all mountain skis apparently. I may have got confused though about what was being redefined, mid fat or all mountain.

can I post this quick enough before Pablo refers you to the Armadas again ? :D

but seriously, that's a typo isn't it? mid fat is the archetypal all mountain ski in current line ups, so much that the two terms are all but synonymous.

I refered to the manufacturer's and reviewer's commonly used definition, which generally have 70mm to 80mm waist, not anyone else's.

have you tried typing "all mountain mid fat skis" into Google ?

all mountain mid fat skis

Picking a mainstream manufacturer like Atomic, all of their "all mountain" Nomad range of skis fit into the 70-80mm widths. For example, It's the same for all of them of course. The review site "realskiers" (and there's never enough of those) say "Some of the labels we've used in the past for this genre are "mid-fat," "all mountain" and "cruisers." Waists are in the 70 to 78mm range, turn radii vary in the mid to high teens." and so on for a couple of thousand pages.

I like this one

That's so good I just got it on iTunes :D

I'm not a fan of the latter Warren Miller movies, they got a bit stale for me. That said, I do wonder how much things have moved from Blizzard of Aaahs really, arguably the first and still the best ski movie, just perfectly capturing the mood of the times and the place (mostly Chamonix).
