In short, no, you'll be fine. There's loads of snow - and snow always holds up surprisingly well when it's sunny; rain is the real killer.

funnily enough, not always actually, it depends on the snow depth and the ground temperature. Once the ground is warming up then not a lot makes any difference. But with enough snow and a the ground staying cold then the rain will only produce a metamorphosis on layers towards to surface.

That's why I wasn't very concerned, that can't happen in this slope. The avalanche defences above prevent it and flat section below control the extent. It's what makes that slope such a good bad weather option along with the trees lower down for better visibility. There's lots of small rocks though which are a real hazard if you're not careful. Some of my favourite skiing in the area.

Pablo is right, with some care it's not really an issue for most people.

I wasn't particularly pushing it, I was 50% sure the slope would fail under me so it wasn't surprising or shocking in anyway. I was pretty much certain about the amount of snow that would move, there was a split second I wondered if I'd got it right though

Statistically I'm at a higher than average risk which is cruel trick of maths and training so I wouldn't read too much into trained people getting caught in terms of your own personal risk.

I wouldn't buy Arc'Teryx , the customer service is a lot better than the quality.

Whats so bad about their quality?

they get a lot of returns, I know people who've returned the jackets several times only to have the replacement fail again.

Tony_H wrote:I note you wear Haglofs - would you recommend their stuff?

Yes, it's robust, it's a common as muck here though along with Mammut. Haglofs is a winner if weight is a factor, they've some of the lightest stuff around at a reasonable price point.

ABS pack.. interesting. Do you use an avalung/have a built in avalung too?

I have a standalone avalung, I use it if I'm with people I think may not be able to dig me out very quick. I don't want rucksacks with it integrated, I've got enough rucksacks already without having ones only for the winter.

The ABS sack I tend to use if I'm on my own, it's OK but inflexible, it's only a day sack so I can't use it multi-day and there's a limit to how much kit you can get in it. The new vario looks OK in that regard though.

It was a 50/50 thing, I though the slope might go but I was pretty sure (like 95%) it was a small slab, there was a split second where I wondered if I'd got it wrong as I was breathing snow though

these are mutually incompatible, you can't do those things if it's insulted.

I spoke to them after I posted this message.

Annoying thing is they don't do the junior lift pass (called 'reduced' where we're going) so teens pay adult price. The difference is about 8 quid at today's exchange rate. And they require a photo for passes over 3 days which the resort don't..... According to website.

I would imagine that's because a lot of lift companies take your photo as you're stood there now so if someone is doing the pass for you they'll need a photo but if you went in person you wouldn't.
