Pavel,
As I write this the sun is just starting to light the eastern sky and the clouds are underlit in that atmospheric way they do at dawn and your story has moved me to tears ... both of euphoria and of dreams. Simply, Thank You. Jan |

Oh, and the first person to mention Pontypool, Swadlingcote, Milton Keynes or any anagrams of “The Snowdome” gets a Chinese Burn

As a kid growing up in the 70’s, in the UK, my monthly fix of SKI Magazine was about the only thing that kept me going. I’d spend hours reading about kit I could never afford, places I could only dream about visiting and gazing at ski photos of people living life to the full but the thing that lives with me to this day is the beauty of the names …
Steamboat, Jackson Hole, Sugarloaf, Aspen, Big Sky, Lake Tahoe, Keystone, Purgatory, Snowbird, Kimberley, Sundown, Kicking Horse, Taos and the incomparably named Heavenly Just typing those names conjures up a whole world of fantasy skiing and evokes some very powerful and emotive feelings. On a number of occasions I’ve considered booking a one way flight and visiting all those faraway, magical places but so far have resisted the temptation because deep down I am afraid that they wouldn’t be able to live up to the billing I’ve been giving them for the last 30 odd years … This got me thinking about European resort names. Naturally, and with a few notable exceptions, the resorts are not “named” but just use the geographic location name and somehow that seems right and proper. At the same time the names also seem less “inspirational” and I certainly don’t remember building a mental list of dream resorts from Europe, with one exception and that’s Grindelwald for some reason it just sounds right … So, does anyone else have ski resort names that conjure up magic? And if you’ve been there how did the PR match the reality ?? Jan |

Karen,
This is a very common feeling amongst guests to the village and one which I personally would like to be able to see a way to improve. All I can say is that the Ski School have been doing this a LONG time and to my knowledge there have never been any problems. Another way to look at it, is that there is a fairly fixed number of beds in the village and that means that there is an upper limit to the number of potential guest that could possibly book lessons. Sepp (Head of Ski School) has a cunning plan that involves liaising with the hotels and independents to understand numbers and will bring more fully trained and qualified staff in to help out at peak times ... New Year and Feb Half terms being the two peak weeks you can bet no one in the village is going to want to let guests down (or lose out on a fee;)) … All that having been said, in your position I would still prefer to know that the lessons are booked and then it’s another thing to tick off your list ;) Hope this goes some way to helping ...
