Tony_H I'm in a feisty mood today so I'm comin atcha...
I completely agree that it shouldn't be made compulsory. That is not a thumb, and it's directed towards Brussels. I think Acko's point about wearing a helmet and leathers and feeling safe in that example was an exaggeration for effect. At that speed the g force is around 4, steering is impossible, the rider is hyper aware of his surroundings, eyes glued to the tarmac way ahead, any slight movement in your body or head creates a break in the aerodynamics which affects the stability of the bike immediately etc etc. It's as much as anyone can do to just hang on, and I had someone to tuck behind. The idea of someone sitting there serenely thinking "wow I feel so safe" makes me laugh. So if you believe this example without question, do you also believe that this person would ski like a saint, right up until the point where they put a lid on and become a demon? I just doesn't make sense. I don't think it's anything to do with a helmet. It's the individual. I'm going now. Got boring work to do :( |

Acko, with respect I gotta disagree with a couple of your points.
I don't get the connection. But lets assume it's true. Does that mean that in order to make it more difficult for legislation to be made, that nobody should wear a helmet? That's bizarre! I completely disagree with it being made compulsory - all adults should be free to make their own choices. But your point is a bit topsy turvy even for my (off the wall) mind.
Really? Acko, when you're doing 160mph on a bike, leathers and lid or not, you know you're not safe  I'm not having a go here. I've had bikes myself, the last one being a Fazer 600, and have been on the back of an R1 doing in excess of that speed. Nothing about the experience generates a feeling of safety - the forces exerted on your whole body are immense and pretty difficult to ignore to that extent! Others have also made the point about wearing a helmet skiing giving people the feeling that they're safer or invincible or whatever. It's not true of everybody I can assure you. It's a generalisation. Some may be affected like that, but I do believe they're in the minority, and I find it difficult to believe that they weren't a bit reckless to start off with. I don't buy into the concept of the immediate transformation from timid sensible considerate skier without a lid, to arrogant aggressive mentalhead with a lid. Sorry. |

Nope. It's easier to use this one

Hmmm... wierdly, the infrequent possibility that I might be able to practice on a mountain close by, is the biggest attraction for me to buy a pair of skis rather than rent.

Sorry for the cross threading, but are snow socks a good alternative to winter tyres? It sounds like they achieve the same thing, but with more flexibility.

Contact your car insurer if you are thinking about fitting winter tyres!

If you have time Tony I'd be interested in how they get on. |
