Advice......

Jobster that's shocking news - so sorry for you and your "hubby"; big wishes for a speedy recovery...

As for skiing again? Hell YES!

But... the timescale is going to be totally specific to Rich and you absolutely must (both) follow the advice of the docs.

A quick Google shows up, amongst other things, advice to take up cross-country skiing after a heart attack, so it's by no means ruled out. But take your time and go with the docs.

Someone on snowheads had a personal experience quite recently, related in this thread :-

May be worth dropping them a PM and swapping notes. Nothing will help and inspire you more than talking to other people who've been through the same thing.

My Dad had a serious heart "event" (just short of arrest) a couple of years ago and, although he had to take various medication for a while, is now probably fitter than I am. At 75 he leads his local Ramblers and is always skipping off to hilly places with his Saga-Lout buddies to go walking...

Time and patience, but take care (of yourself too - don't forget you're having a traumatic time too).

Where?

Oh yeah, you mean "North of Milton Keynes"!

Oh alright then... forecast dancing around a bit but looks like being usefully cold by Sunday night, snowing from Sunday through Monday and Tuesday and...

Yes but no but yes, as occasionally happens up there (I'm told), it may be a tad windy until early next week... if it calms down then the hills could be in for a bit a pasting by mid-week.

The best place to look for Scottish conditions is, of course, the venerable WinterHighland website.

We'll keep our fingers crossed for you... 8)
The mostly settled weather of the past week is about to change...

Weather and Snow Next Week

A series of weather systems will cross The Alps over the coming week, in a complete change to the cold and clear conditions prevailing for much of this month so far.

Wetter, warmer air will push in from the West over this weekend - with the North Western Alpine area in the immediate track. Light cloud on Saturday will give way to stormier conditions on Sunday. Initially temperatures will rise to bring rain up as far as 1500 metres, with snow above of course. Precipitation is likely to be quite heavy from late on Sunday through into Monday.

Subsequently, temperatures should fall quickly below the seasonal average (by early next week) - with successive bands of snow falling to progressively lower levels.

Although it's outside the reliable time-scale of the forecast models, there are strong indications that further snow will follow over the following week - perhaps through the rest of the month. We expect our Powder Alarms to be popping this weekend (have you set yours?) and we'll be on the case (and on the snow)...

This thread has got almost as bizarre as Ross and Ise bigging up Milton Keynes yesterday...

Anyway, never mind Austrians, I thought it was Australians that came free with every beer in the Alps?

The Auberge is a bit out of town, and across the other side of the ski area from Le Chinaillon - so you're probably looking at meeting in Grand Bornand if you've got transport?

Zoom out on the Google Map for the Auberge here.

Oh right, that explains all the rubbish driving and aggression on UK roads then... it's all the foreigners!

Relying on "common sense" or "being a good driver" is daft and will plainly put you on the wrong side of the law if you apply your UK driving approach on the continent.

Karen - the AA has what looks like a pretty comprehensive coverage of European Driving Requirements, by country here :-
http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/overseas/countrybycountry.html

They also have a handy list of Equipment required and recommended.

Hopefully we all know about the hi-vis jacket required in France now (on the spot fine), but did you know a First Aid Kit is compulsory in Austria (though not, surprisingly, in France or Germany apparently)?
