Well, you don't crack skis without a strong modicum of commitment!

Endorsing Idavies view of the Niederau red ski school, childrens classes demand the utmost.

Have also to endorse Idavies instructor credentials, since she taught both of my sons to ski.

Now, do I tip you L? Or do you reimburse me cos the beggars are catching me up? :P

As for skis, if Stockli Stormriders can withstand ise, they should last you a while

I snapped mine but that's probably unusual.

And the mode of failure was? :!:

I have a 90 degree sharp bend in my Fischer Superglass ski history.

Dave Mac the Raichle Flexon Comp is back in production as the Full Tilt. If you have the "right" shaped foot, this may be an option. Apparently they include a choice of tongues to vary the boot's performance. Sold in the UK too.

Bandit, thanks for that, am checking it out. You may, by now, have formed the view that I am not prone to worry overly about ski gear. However, since one of my ski-pals broke the hinge on his rear entries, I have errmm re-assessed my situation. They do have a lot of km on the clock. Do you think I could take them back and complain? 8)

dave mac, will i still see daylight between your legs on the Merky with these new skis????!!!!!!!!!!! L.

L, have to confess this worried me, so have just done a quick measure of the Volkls, only 10mm wider at the tip than the K2s. I venture to suggest that your eyesight is not that good.

Old age and treachery will not always overcome youth and skill

Yup, I understand that Brucie, more than happy with 99%. My Niederau day descent record was only beaten two years ago by two 17 year-old Austrian sh..s, sorry, er lads.

As for treachery,I once moved my sons bindings forward on his K2s,he skiied like a begginer all day,no problem keeping up with him

Micric, full respect. :P
I can still whup my grown sons down the hill, but unfortunately, not through the speed traps. Streamlining may be an issue.

Anyway, my whole philosophy on skis is this. If thay cannot make me go faster than the skis I already have, then, regardless of the shape/age/sexymodel draped over the bindings, why would I buy them?

bandit wrote:Dave Mac Next time you fancy a little change, look out a pair of Stockli's. I love my Stormrider AT's, for the following reasons:

They will straightline without wobble.
They grip ice and hold an edge better than every other ski I have used -ever. Not found anything skiable that deflects the tip.
The base is made from a very hard material, quite resistant to dings IMV
In a 158 they have a 17.1 m turn radius, how big would you like your GS turns?
I have yet to find the top speed, suggest it's in excess of 100kph for the 158. I always run out of slope 1st
Made in Switzerland, by Swiss folk
Light and springy to use

Of course, for such a thoroughbred ski, you might need a better boot to drive them )

So there :D

Ahh, bandit, so subtle. The thought has crossed my mind that the Stocklis may also need the boots to have a more superior content than they suffer just now. After your many postings, Stockli Stormriders is writ large, should I have the opportunity.

As for basic speed, again it is the contents of the boot that may be the limiting factor, although having a new pair of bases might push on another couple of kph.

However, I am coming round to the conclusion that my Raichles will not outlast me, and that they may yet become plantpots/birdsnests. But where will I look for a good rear entry boot? My OH, recently had her Nordica R/Es refurbished, (in Saas Fee), where they also sold new. But I haven't found a similar offer for Raichle.

In case the maths have escaped you, two and a half pairs of skis lasted me 38 years!

Sorry to rain on your parade Dave - But would you consider buying a 6 year old computer, even if it was new?

Not a valid comparison, I fear. As far aI can see, the main change is connected with edge shape and length. With computers the main changes in 6 years, are duality, capacity, some component technology, some speed and downsizing, and ....all at a cost reduction.

Have you tried newer skis or are you just loving the old ones? If we ever cross paths I will have to get you on the Vists..

I keep my own skis in Niederau, but when I go elsewhere, I hire with Skiset. I normally change the skis midweek, so in an average season, I try at least 4 pairs of new skis. A wee bit of adjustment to technique....and off we go.

Not keen on too tight a radius, I find them unstable at speed. Also, dislike skis that are ultra-wide at the head and tails ~ Given that I have a preponderance for skiing legs together, a wide ski shows symptoms of AVK. My experience is that modern shapes of skis slow me down.

Apart from that, I don't get too hung up about skis. You can assume that in my skiing life, I have used a full historical range of skis.

Bandit once picked up on the fact that I had used marker latch up bindings, this giving me an age of 102 years, (she said) I was afraid to admit at that time that my first set of skis were wooden Elan Jets, screw on edges, with cable bindings, (£3.0s.0d) ~ so Tony's photo wasn't that far out!

What did you buy? Does this mean that you have gone all modern and short on your planks?

Definitely not.

I guess I'm gonna need lots of these~  , to get through this thread.

They are just my style of ski. Lots of torsionsal stiffness, so I can trust them, not carvers, have to be skiied hard to make a turn, all grey and shiny. Six year old stock, but brand new. £49.00.

Volkl Vertigo G2. length 188, so yes, have gone shorter!

Feel a bit of a spendthrift really.

Bit of sterotyping here Brandy. But then, your're just a young feller. :D

I would not qualify with your criteria.

I bought a new pair of skis last Friday. I realise this is a wanton waste of money. Especially, since my 12 year old K2s were just worn in. (3~6 weeks per season) And when buying the K2s, I traded in a pair of Blizzard Firebirds, just 26 years after procuring them.

Also just bought a new jacket, there was hardly a mark on the 10 year old one. Might have to change the avatar!

Boots are about 18 years old though, rear entry Reichle 777, and these are beginning to show their age.

As for a free age pass, you have had it chum. The lift companies long ago have worked out that the guys doing the most skiing, can hardly remember their own names. Had a day on the the Schiwelt with Admin, earlier this season, asked for a reduced price pass, (Me, not Admin) ~ was told you would get a reduction when you are past 80!

So, while on the tennis/squash court/running track/fells I cannot maintain the pace of a few years ago, my ski speed is still getting quicker. Still working on improvements to technique, still learning tighter lines down my favourite mountain.

What was the question again?
