Saw this strange sight in Cervinia for the first time in 1979; precipitation laden with Saharan dust, apparently!

The Planibel is grossly over-priced (and it looks like something from East Germany at the height of Communism!) but the Hotel Du Glacier is a great place to stay, the Miramonti is an excellent 4-star and much cheaper if you book direct. But Alpe D'Huez it is then!

Do you really need it spelt out? For starters, and I'm sure, there's more: equipment, clothing, lift passes, access to ski areas, coaching, transport, accommodation, insurance, food, race licences, etc etc. Imagine the costs involved in going on a season-long ski trip and then multiplying the costs many times.

The whole programme - and that's why Ms Alcott should be considered to have done well. No lottery funding, no backing from the federation, just self-generated sponsorship and self-funding. A disgrace, really!

Tone, La Rosiere is definitely not like the French 'industrial skiing' resorts; it's small and not particularly challenging. It is made by La Thuile, which is bigger and more challenging. Why not stay there (cheaper to eat, drink etc) and nip into France when the mood takes you?

The British Ski and Snowboard Federation and the British Olympic Association had five places allocated at the Sochi Olympics but set the qualification criteria so high that these places were handed back to the organising committee. The fault lies there, not with Ms Alcott who did remarkably well considering that she had a broken leg when the season started and only raced for the first time a couple of weeks before the games. Apparently, there's a huge rumpus going on inside British ski racing circles and calls for the head men to resign etc etc!

I've been looking at sno, iglu, icelolly and bookable ski for my late-season trip - and they all come up with exactly the same deals, suggesting they are travel agents. Further investigation suggests for the week I'm interested in they are advertising Inghams and Ski Total holidays in particular. Might as well go direct to the tour op....
