Glaciers from Space

This beats all. While I was in college I had a person ask my professor, "Why all the big to do about glaciers? They just melt in the summer anyway"
Travelling alone ... UPDATE

Jenno wrote:Hello people, can I have your thoughts on the following please:

This season coming up my loving wife has given me permission to go off skiing for a week whilst leaving her at home looking after the brood (we all went last year but financial restraints have meant calling off another family skiing trip till 2011). However my 2 skiing friends , (who are of similar intermediate standard) have decided this is the year they CAN'T go, one having jacked work in to go back to Uni as a mature student and the other one too tied up with work (have you ever heard such a thing?! ) ')

So it looks like for now I may well be travelling alone which I don't have a problem with at all but the questions are:

1) Do I return to a resort where I 'know the ropes' i.e. Kirchberg/Kitzbuhel/Niederau and where I know ski school staff, bar staff (at least if they haven't changed!), ski hire shops and the resorts in general etc
2) Just go somewhere new in any case
3) Just wait until last minute deals are out there (can't go Jan. needs to be Feb or Mar) and way up the costs against likeability of resorts
4) None of the above or a mixture of the above!

Thanks!

I go it alone frequently. I'd just make sure your aware of where your at. Just have fun
Sexy leg Admin, naw seriously that's nasty Find the owners and make them responsible  You wouldn't kick the cute dog in the ski boot would you? 8)

I need to be able to ski rather than roll down the slopes in 3 months.
I`m now a human spare tyre in need to fit into my already XXL sized ski attire.
All my inmense humanity would be grateful for some not very complex exercises and "mise en point" to both lose weight and increase the muscle fitness for ski.
I lazily stopped going to the sports centre when came back from skiing in WONDERFUL SOUTH LAKE TAHOE RESORTS 6 months ago. Typical excuses:jetlag, Easter, mañana,mañana.
I am positively resoluted and commited to start a diet and restart my swimming( used to swim 2500 m daily, those were the days....) and gymm.
Could work out 6 or 5 days a week along 1h30 min, maybe 2 hours.

Please I know there would be a charitable soul out there with a passion to
make this world, and me, lighter.
Thanks

I'm not small either, but it doesn't stop me and shouldn't stop you. Ride a bike for 20-30 minutes, go for a jog, or a brisk walk. Start doing exercises to strengthen your knees and legs. Drink more water/ eat a little less. Working your can off will hurt more then help. Your body needs time to rest after a big change. Make sure you stretch everything out. Keep with a routine! Make it fun. With a little searching on youtube you can find great skiing exercises that don't require a weight room  good luck

I'd say to stop drinking, but I can't see to keep my mouth off my Tirolean stash

Kimmer wrote:Hello

I'm a total newbie to Skiing, after beating depression and overcoming social phobia I am now making the most of my life & want to take my first holiday in years and decided I'd love to take up skiing :)

Planning on doing a "learn to ski in a day" course at one of the indoor snow domes before embarking on a holiday, most probably by snow train (not overcome the flying phobia just yet :?

I will be going with my sister (also beginner) we are both in the later half of our 20's, not that that really matters!

I guess I am looking for advice on where to go, what tour operators are best to use for a "smoothly" run trip (don't want to be left stranded on a train station somewhere - que anxiety!) and any other hints & tips I should know before embarking on skiing holiday.

Hey, The guys and gals on here are awesome! Picked a great sport. Skiing is a great cure for depression and or anxiety. it worked for me. Where do you hail from? If you don't want to go train hopping fly and bus, or drive. Make yourself familiar with the area via the ski area's websites, stuff like a piste map. Most importantly have fun.

All the flights from UK landed within a few minutes of each other and we had to queue for an hour and a half to get our car - nightmare. The combination of Ryanair and Grenoble airport is not a good one - no boots or helmets in hand luggage, you have to wear all your clothes to keep within the 15kg baggage limit, smallest car hire unit ever at an airport and only one desk for the cheapest car hire company.......

To back up Dave Mac driving from Innsbruck to N last year we saw the traffic (on the other side of the AB) from Germany. If the public transport links are good I would use them OP.

Are you serious? Are you allowed under-things, or are those prohibited. Doesn't Lufthansa have any good prices out of the UK?
