Riding the first lifts up at 0815 this morning we reach the top of the cable car to find the drag lift isn't running yet, it's normal but it's not worth waiting so we climb straight off the cable car to save time and cut the first track up.

It's a reasonable climb and we're quickly up in the ice of the glacier.

& right after here it's so heavily crevassed that we rope up for safety, it's always a minor pain skiing or skinning on a rope but it needs to be done.

& now we get a good view of the objective, the Allalinhorn at 4027m one of the 4000m peaks the dominate the Saas Fee skyline,

the wind's hit the ridge a bit and it's not practical to continue on skis so we rack them and switch to crampons for a while until the conditions ease enough to return to skis, later we switch back to crampons to make the actual summit ridge....

... where we pose for the obligatory photo's...

... including the compulsory shot of the Matterhorn...

.. and then we ski a couple of thousand metres down towards Saas Fee in time for a lunchtime drink ...

The Allalinhorn is the peak on the left.

yes, I know but Tony is right, if you don't then take them to a shop, you can do yourself, and others, a lot of damage if your bindings aren't set correctly.

Bummer..you get a whole new one :D

it's just arrived, brand new in a box. So, many thanks to BCA and their agent Gecko Supply for sorting that out speedily.

of course I can use any of them, but I chose to use to use a Tracker by way of a recommendation. An F1 still has about the greatest receive range though, maybe 30 metres greater than a Pulse or DTS

As an update, we now have two new Mammut Pulses in the kit larder which are the weapons of choice right now.

aharwood wrote:As far as BASI is concerned I know quite a few very good BASI instructors and one or two exceptionsl ones. However, we have a different system and it cannot be as advanced as those countries in Europe which actually have large industries based around skiing unlike Britain where we have 5ish small areas which are limited by the amount of time they have decent snow on which to ski, teach, instruct or whatever.

We have the same system, just like other ISIA member countries, so instructors have to meet the same standard. It's a bit like doing degrees at different universities, you're still a doctor whether you qualify in London or Edinburgh. Traditionally, some UK organisations have set their bar higher than continental ones to avoid that sort of ill informed criticism and you can be quite certain if you held what was supposed to be an internationally recognised qualification where you'd not met the standard your host country would complain pretty quick.

It's irrelevant as to how many ski areas we have, most of the French population live as far from skiing as the UK population do and it's just the same in Italy. Only in Switzerland and Austria do the entire population live within short distances of ski slopes.

I would consider a 4 year old car very flash!!!!!!!!!!!!

my point was I'll not be trading up anytime soon, in fact, I'd rather like to get by without a car if I could. And I'm pretty certain it's the last (but one) brand new one we'll have for a while.
