We go to Ruka, just below the arctic circle. I know you can get internal flights from Helsinki to Kuussamo airport, Ruka is the closest about 20mins away. Or internal flight from Helsinki to Kittila and then you have Levi and Yllas, again about 20 mins transfer.
But there are resorts about 70kms from Helsinki, not been there but there are quite a few.

I am gonna be there at weekends mainly, it's not work )but was thinking of going for a full week and doing Monday to Friday somewhere, 4 days max. Is there enough in Ruka to keep me occupied?

That's quite interesting, which store was that? Most of them won't do anything slightly out of the ordinary, servicing just means running them through the grinder at whatever it's set as. Anywhere that is able to do something so unusual, and for a board that's very unusual, is to be commended really.

I went in and talked to a guy and said I wanted him to take some time and hand service my board as I had a machine service in Sallbach and they made a real mess of it. He charged me 80CHF for it but set the edges to 87deg and finished the base with what I can only describe as a micro-groove so it was not a flat surface. Basically it had raised groves about 1/3rd of a millimeter apart along the length and width of the base. He told me afterwards that he had assumed I wanted a racing setup after I had requested my edges at 87deg. I am unsure if this was machine done or not. Anyway I was a little skeptical, but as he had salvaged my extensively damaged edges so well I paid him and thanked him. Riding it the next day was an experience, as I said the first half day took some getting used to. The base treatment did make it faster in flat sections and sounded like someone running a nail across a tightly pulled tent when ever you put the grove at a right angle to the direction of travel.

I was exceptionally happy with what he had done.

The shop was the little distance up from the Bahnhof (opposite the bus station), you go through the store and out back to the service centre, unfortunately I cant remember the name but know exactly where to go back to.

My friend came back a week and a half ago and he loved it although he said the umbrella bars weren't as good as Obertauern.
I'm sure we'll find some umbrella bars we love :)

Tino - I don't suppose you saw anywhere that shows English sport do you?
Long shot but I was hoping to see the Tottenham v Leeds cup game on Wednesday.
Also any Karaoke?
lol

Cant say I did notice to be honest, but I would be surprised if you could not find somewhere!!

You may have already headed off, but have a good one!!
Ask me about 5 days before you arrive. Powder on a glacier is not common. It can be throwing it down in resort or on the slopes whilst a glacier above gets a sprinkling. That being said, for the most varied terrain I would go to the Hintertux.

I had my board done to 87 degrees at Christmas whilst in Grindelwald. I only saw 2 disdvantages:

you spend the first 5 hours on your arse

and

they need re-doing every 2 days

apart from that I can see no disadvantage in any conditions, it simply gives you more control.

I don't think many shops in Stoke have much in the way of decent stuff in, do they?

went to uni in Stoke, all I learnt there was the fact the word decent is redundant in that sentence :)
fewer boarders?
