traveling from Newcastle makes either driving or the train take longer than flying - and more expensive too as the train would involve getting to London for early morning and that means either a hotekl the night before or the firs train of the day which has no discounted tickets (i do it with clients far too often)

If you fly with Jet2 from Toon to Chambery at 6am you get win: we were on the slopes in VDI by 1pm this year so can still give you extra time - all depends on resort I guess

What does that actually mean? How can they make the snow quicker? (apart from turning it to actual ice)

That'sexactly what they do. The old method was to water te course and get the Austrian Army wallahs to side slip down the course. Now they use chemicals.

Also they sculpt the snow so that you pretty much have to follow the racing line which puts you on course for hitting all the jumps etc

I'd second that - Ive done both Sauze and Livigno and had some epic nights out in both. The bar at the base of the Carasello is like an Austrian rave at times - only place I've ever done the conga wearing ski boots.....

How about Serre Chevalier area in France

I've never skiied it myself but it gets a very good rep from friends who have and other J2Ski-ers - I know that TonyH for one really rates the area

Big attraction is that (in the right snow) you can use Briancon as a base. Briancon is a "proper" town, nay city with a population of over 10,000 so it will have all the amenities you seek. There are prettier places to stay on the circuit but this may be a good trade off

piste map is here http://www.serrechevalier.com/skimap/skimap.jpg

Can you ski?

I didn't think you could catch an edge when travelling at 2mph

I too get that weird feeling at the start of the week but also have an amazing tendency like Barney's OH to fall over on flat bits:

I'd been skiing for several years when my wife first decided to give it a try. Off we went to VDI (got a deal, not necessarily first choice beginners resort I know but she wanted "picture-skew" and she enrolled in ski school.

I skiied on my own that morning (with the obligatory first run wobbles as others have said) and then headed down from Solaise via the red - all fine.

As I crossed the bottom of town / nursery slopes within sight of my wife and her beginner group finishing up, I managed to ski over my own feet through lack of concentration and was crowned with "fall of the week" by the beginners!

Will it make me ski better, if not its no use to me :(

for a grand I'd want it to go and do the skiing for me, sharpen and wax the skis afterwards and then come and buy me a pint with Jaagy chaser in whichever bar I'd spent my afternoon whilst my thousand pound coat was doing its stuff!
