There's a McDonald's ;)
I found eating at the slopes quite reasonable compared to France. $9 would get you a big burger and chips and a bottle of coke was $1 I believe. (This was last year) I can't really comment on in Banff itself as I always ate in a large group and didn't really pay attention to the prices. The variety of food available is brilliant though: chinese, indian, italian, french, british, and steak steak steak everywhere. |

I wasn't too impressed by Tunnel myself.
The actual tunnel itself has such a sharp entrance to it that you can't carry enough speed to make it through without polling, or using the wall mounted rope for the boarders. After that there was a seriously steep black that had so much powder on it it was practically unskiable for everyone I saw attempting it. This meant you didn't have the speed coming off the steep section to make it up the slight uphill that led onto the route home. However, Tunnel had been closed all week I was there due to excess snow and only opened the day before we were due to leave so it might not have been in its usual state. Have a great time though, I thoroughly enjoyed APH last year |

The S9's are surprisingly comfortable. They grip the side of your head like a pair of Oakleys rather than all the way round like a headband (I can actually get my hand between them and the back of my head. You do have to put them on before a pair of Oakleys though otherwise they try to overlap. The signal quality is fine as long as you put the iPhone in a pocket that doesn't get covered by the movement of your arms (less of a problem if you use polls I'd imagine). The one (big) downside with them is the inability to skip track, as I mentioned. I plug a Sony BT adapter in and pair with that instead which provides full functionality. I've never jailbroken my iPhone but am tempted if I can get the Voice Control feature from the 3GS on my 3G. |

I have a pair of Motorola S9's for my iPhone which I cannot recommend enough, although they do make it hard to find a hat that covers your ears.
Last season they allowed me to skip tracks without touching my iPhone, but unfortunately, since they updated to OS 3.0, the fwd/back functions don't work! Hoping (unrealisticly) that this'll be fixed by another update before my 6th March ski trip! |

I was actually thinking about your numerous recommendations for the place... I wasn't insinuating that you eat/drink enough to support the economy! ;) |

The mayor of Mayrhofen has just been on to say how glad he is that you're ok. He doesn't want to think about what would have happened to the tourist economy of Mayrhofen if you'd not made it! ;)
Glad you're ok  |

Having seen an article recently about a guy who broke his neck in a foreign country and is now completely paralysed, but doesn't have adequate insurance to get him flown home by air ambulance, I am surprised that so few people that do dangerous sports don't have proper insurance.
It is always the case of "it'll never happen to me" but three years ago it did happen to my mum. She broke her neck in Kenya and had to spend 4 weeks in intensive care before being flown home by a private air ambulance. It can happen to anyone, thank goodness she had suitable insurance which paid for everything. The EHIC card, if I am correct, only entitles you to free basic treatment in a European hospital, so if you hurt yourself skiing it does not cover the cost of getting you off of the mountain, and if you need to go to a major hospital you'll be waiting hours for an ambulance to get to the resort to take you there, as I believe most in resort medical and ambulance services are private. and therefore very expensive. It cost £600 for my girlfriend to be brought down the mountain in a "blood wagon", driven 200m to the resort dr's and then treated, all for a minor tear of a knee ligament. All we had to pay was the excess on our insurance. Our insurance was found on MoneySupermarket and we chose something like the 3rd cheapest policy which cost about £60 for both of us including world wide and winter sports cover. [MaccA] P.S. Do my family sound like a calamity or what! |
