Silverflora - I'm a great believer in complaining if I'm not happy with a service I'm paying for. If you feel you're missing out because the instructor won't translate for your benefit, holler at someone. After all, you're a paying customer. Maybe they could move you into a group with an English-speaking instructor?

Re the theft of your skis, check your hire agreement, as some kind of insurance might have been included. Or your travel insurance - ours included cover for the theft of hired equipment. Bear in mind that you might need a police report or something. I certainly wouldn't hand over 300 Euros without a fight!

Please keep up the skiing. I know it's hard at first, but you'll get the hang of it. My OH and I are probably the slowest learners ever, and if we can do it, anyone can.

Good luck,
Allie

Good point about the carnet of 10 metro tickets, Ally. We bought ours from Raileurope when we were buying our train tickets. Saved lots of time.

Hi PSC. Can't help with the skis, but we've just returned from trip to France, TGV from Paris, so the ticket validation is easy. You will see little machines on the platform, just stick your ticket in and it will mark it with a date and time stamp. There will be signs saying something like "Il faut composter les billets" and you'll see other people doing it. I don't know why they have this system, as the trains have guards who check tickets anyway. Apparently they can get a bit sticky if you don't do it.

Thanks for the review Jim. There's nothing like getting someone's first-hand impressions of a place - much better than anything in a guide book.

Don't you get that reaction very often, then? Do you have a booootiful East Anglian accent Wickers?

Thanks bandit. I brought a piste map back, so I'll have a look at that. :)

Enjoyed reading your report, lovely pics - you had same weather as us. Your transfers sounded like a bit of a mare. Thumbs down to Crystal :(
Did you notice any really easy cruisy green or blue runs? In Les Carroz, most of the blue runs seemed to have steeper sections, which put me off a bit as I'm still nervous. Next year I'm looking for somewhere with a long, gentle run so I can practice my turns.

Forgot to add that we were also stung by the prices in the restaurant by the gondola! Having said that, we found a great big room set aside just for picnics. It's sort of in the gondola station, but separate, and has loads of tables and chairs. I think it's mostly for school groups, but everyone was using it. I don't know if that's a common feature in French resorts, but I thought it was a great idea.
