This from DeseretNews ...

Weather conditions this weekend present an extreme avalanche threat in Utah's back country and unopened ski resorts where the slopes haven't been stabilized.

Heavy snowfall is expected, especially in the highest mountain elevations. The wind will be howling and new snow will fall on a thin layer of unstable "sugary" snow. The combination creates a "triple whammy" threat for anyone who heads for the mountains, said Bruce Tremper, director of the Forest Service's Utah Avalanche Center.

The article (see link above) also includes the following warning...
And the notion that avalanche dangers are higher when the snow is much deeper? Not so, Tremper said. A skier or snowboarder triggering an avalanche on thin snow is going to be raked across the rocks if the sliding snow catches them.

Ski areas now open in Utah include Brighton, Solitude, Snowbird, Alta and Park City - stay safe, people!
Wickers you shouldn't have... no, really, you shouldn't...

Do we call you Shirley at the weekends then?

buy skis online vs in resort

Er, pretty sure Volf is pointing out what you'd need to spend on a quiver of skis (slalom, GS and fatties) equivalent to what you can access in a decent rental shop.

A good number of people (self included) appreciate the option of swapping skis during the week as conditions change.

Owning your own skis is nice (I love mine, although they're getting on a bit and don't get out much) but by hiring you can pay €100 and get to ski on £1500 worth of skis in a week (3 pairs of current, decent skis will cover that) without buying them.

Horses for courses, as always - but, unless you drive (or are lucky enough to have an Alpine bolthole...), the financial case for owning your own is pretty hard to make.

ETA - FarQ beat me to it... darn!

Eek! Looked quite a shallow slope from the vid and a good reminder that even fairly benign looking terrain can be lethal with the wrong snow pack.

That reminds me - have to do some trading to get a new transceiver onto Santa's list!
Looks a very nice ski and a very nice price!

Salomon say...
High-performance all-mountain ski combining Powerline for unrivaled stability and control with all mountain rocker for more terrain versatility. For skiers who ski 80% on-piste.

More info here - www.salomon.com/uk/product/enduro-xt-800.html

I've not skied on the Enduro but the XT800 looks very similar to the X-Wing Tornado of the past few years - which is/was a superb all-mountain ski.

Make sure you size it right but you'd better get your wife something special too.

Don't suppose she could get any more at that price??? just asking...

"Foolishly" travelling swiftly on superb and un-crowded (peak changeover days excepted) roads that go all the way to The Alps?

That's my kind of foolish!

Good news about the gadget... ordered!
Just an update to this - the various forecast models do seem to indicate a breakdown of the current patterns early next week.

Still low confidence but it does look as if something's afoot.

There is very little agreement (between the different runs of the models) about what happens beyond that, so we'll have to wait and see.

The Wigglies for Geneva show a drop in temperature (and a little snow) for the 23rd but you can see how the predictions (the different coloured lines) are all over the place after that...

The above image is a snapshot of the forecasts today (18th November). For the latest, see the current Forecast Ensemble for Geneva.
