Which resort has it all....

Great, useful thread :!:

I must admit I have not been to many resorts in Alps or North America, but
so far my favourites are:

1. Whistler, almost perfect with 2 glaciers, very well prepared pistes and modern lift system, good off-piste, very high standards of accomodation in the stylish village. The main drawbacks are very expensive lift passes, not great apres and looong flying/transfer time.

2. Verbier, superb off-piste, very good variety of runs, views, stylish village, great apres-ski. Main drawbacks: poor piste marking/mapping, links with other parts of 4V far from convenient, although to be improved I hear :), no ski buses from other villages, and expensive apres-ski.

Oh, and Krynica, mainly for pre and apres )

Hi,

I take it then that you can ski Ladies Down Hill Course all the way down to the bottom?
That would be a good news :)

Cheers,

Tony_H wrote:Biki, I've been to Serre Che 3 times in a year, twice in March and once in April. Not a hint of problems with the snow, plenty of high peaks, and tons of runs to go at, with a lot of tree lined skiing too.
Its one of my fav places. I wrote a few reviews on the place on here before, and I'd recommend staying in Villeneuve or Monetier. It really is a unique place, not the usual ski resort but fantastic skiing. Some old lifts, yes, but a well linked area with some brilliant pistes and when it snows, the off piste is unlimited.
If late season is a concern, dont let it be here. Its a little bit special, but dont tell everyone, I wouldnt want the world and his dog turning up and ruining it.

Tony,

You are good man :!:
I won't tell anyone )
My only worry about the place is that this March may not be as good for snow as when you were there.
But I promise I will be watching snow reports for Serre Che until I make my final decision.

Chris Brookes wrote:Reasons why I prefer Murren to Wengen in March or just in general -

Better views
More snow sure
Less commercialised and still car free
Better off piste skiing
Higher resort
No lift q's and now an excellent lift system

Do I need to go on...lol

Thank you very much :!:
That is what I wanted to hear )

msej449 wrote:No, we didn't go over that far. However, as Thyon is north-facing, the conditions are likely to be reasonable. The only problem may be if Nendaz residents decide to drive over to Veysonnaz, given the loss of the Plan du Feu link to Siviez-Tortin.

I forgot to say - the La Tzoumaz 10km toboggan run is still open and seems in reasonable condition too.

4V is one of my favourite areas.

msej449 wrote:Conditions in Verbier are quite reasonable, with a sound base that is only wearing thin in limited spots. Most pistes in Verbier are open and skiable, with a few short runs going brown or closed off, but not at all bad, overall. So far, this isn't a classic year like 2009-10 but it's OK, since at least there was a good base established in Nov-Dec. The last week has felt more like late March/early April.

La Tzoumaz/Savoleyres is relatively good, rather solid/icy in the morning but fine later on. However, the main south-facing links to Verbier are browned-out and you have to use the smaller secondary pistes to get to a rather slushy Carrefour.

Most of the south-facing part of Nendaz is browned-out and closed - you can't get to the Plan du Feu telecabine link.

Some snow is forecast 14/15th. Go to http://www.meteosuisse.admin.ch/web/fr/meteo/previsions_en_detail/previsions_locales.html for a forecast, and enter the postcode or location name (Verbier, La Tzoumaz, Nendaz etc.)

Thanks for the Report.

Did you make it to Brusson or Thyon?

Far Queue wrote:Hi again biki17,

tough one that, as I would have thought that Wengen in early Feb would have been pretty safe.

Personally, I like the Espace Killy (Val D'Isere and Tignes), although I am guessing they will be suffering a bit at the moment too, especially the runs down to Les Brevieres. The good news with them, is that there is plenty of high altitude skiing, so you should be pretty safe for snow.

Don't be put off by the reputation of Val D'Isere. It is perfectly possible to book an apartment online and get a cheapish trip to the resort. It is also a reasonable drive (8 hours from Calais without going mad), meaning you can offset flight costs for your equipment.

I also like Courcheval, but that will be in the same boat I'm afraid.

If you listen to a lot of the others on this forum, they will tell you that you don't have to go high in March, and I am pretty sure that most of the Eastern side of Europe is doing better for snow at the moment, so maybe Austria or Italy will prove a better bet.

I am still hoping to go again in March, and am currently looking at Val Gardena or Selva, but will not rule out somewhere like Livigno or Austria.

I am just going to see how it pans out and take it from there.

Good luck )

Tony,

Val Gardena, Selva and particularly Corvara would have been my first choice but we are somewhat restricted by the specific date that we may travel and cannot find any deals there. The same applies to Espace Killy and a whole of Austria.
We might however, if we are lucky, get a deal to Courchevel, Cervinia, Livigno, Jungfrau, Montgenevre, Serre Chevalier or Norway :?:.

All we need is snow :!:

Many thanks ) and regards,
