It won't cost you a penny. You only need gps switched on not data. Switch off wifi too as switched on it will keep looking for a signal using up battery power.
Most of these apps have an option to download a hi res piste map, do that via wifi before you go.
I'll be using the La Plagne one in March. Used the 3V one last year.

I skied the face the day after race day a couple of years ago, at no point did I feel in control. I'd love to try it on race prepared skis, on my all mountain skis with fairly blunt edges it was horrific!

If you are serious about your skiing and will be going every year, then have a rethink on buying your own boots. A properly fitted pair will make a big difference to your skiing. You'll get more value for money out of them than just about any other ski item.
