could be wrong but im led to believe the recco units are not worth a great deal as the locator units are only stored in a few places round resorts. so someone who witnessed the slide has to go and find a person in authority who then sends a team out. when time is of the essence... myself and the group i ski with all use tranceivers which always give off a signal but if one of group gets caught, the rest switch to search and start immediatlly. never had to use one in anger, but in practice never takes more than a couple of mins.these are only any good however if all in your group wear one, know how to use it and carry shovels and probes. if you only ski on piste, really dont need it, but if you go off, is essential, and peace of mind.i also carry a recco, cant hurt to...

all the top brands are pretty good.try a few on with some weight in to see which fits you best and is most comfortable. i have had a few but also prefer da kine, i have the small and large version of the heli pro which i love. both have camel back inserts and other useful features. in the large the camel back tube comes through the shoulder strap and the end is concealled in a pocket until neeeded to prevent freezing. im not on a commision from da kine honestly...

what, other than the usual spare clothing and chocolate do you carry on the mountain? generally i have a camal back, shovel, probe, tranceiver, gloves, goggles, length of para cord, couple of tools and a small survival tin with knife, flint, matches, wire saw, candle and few other bits and bobs in. its a little peace of mind for me. have changed from when i started boarding hating having to carry a back pack to feeling a little naked without one now... its also an element of liking tools and gadgets generally anyway. what man dosen't?

dont stop, i enjoy them all and as i occasionally get spare time at work it happily whiles away a few moments reading them.
i dont actually regard my life as dull, just in comparrison to yours perhaps! i've only recently joined this and snowheads and its doing wonders to getting me excited for my week in the snow, esp as i missed last year due to buying my first property. im enjoying all your coments, just been reading your posts on snow shoes which is useful as this year we plan to hire a guide for some back country boarding. money and conditions allowing we're also hoping to have a go at heli skiing, feel ought to do it once at least! any experience of this? |
