dave urner wrote:same question but Les Menuires as the location, anyone recommend anywhere reasonably priced for lunch & evening beers. just about to order Euros & will be lucky to get parity with the £.

In Les Menuires "Bruyers", try La Chouette, if you are staying in Les M its a cheapish place for lunch, difficult to get to in the evening. Small beer €2.80, Hamburger and chips €8.50 decent portions. On the Mountain Le Chalet Des Neige top of the 3 roc bubble, eat outside they have a snack bar, if you eat in the resturant Tratiflette €15.50, it is one of the best I have ever eaten and comes with a decent salad, but more of a treat than every day lunch, a small beer is €3.00.

In Les M try the Trattoria, the pizzas are good, service can vary, it wasn't expensive compared to the others, there are loads of bars in the La Croisette

There is a sport 2000 in Bruyers, not used them, they are called Snow Sport, your limited as its not easy to get to Les Meniures without skis. No deals on skipasses, just back and bought the 3V pass, which you will need.

Isobel

was in Meribel Mottaret before Christmas
Restaurant Cote Brune - lunch
Beer €3.70 25cl
Hamburger and chips €16.50
Salad goats cheese €13.50
Omelete ham and cheese €12.00

The waters free

You can eat next door a lot cheaper, its a snack bar and you sit outside (they have umbrella's with heater)we normaly go there but is was cold and wanted to sit inside.

Prices at Rond Point were similar, though they do have a "self Service" counter on the decking (over to the right) that is cheaper and does hamburgers and hot dogs.

If you get over to Couchevel 1850 go for Bar Le Jump at Croisette
Hamburger and Chips €12.00
Salad Savoyard €9.50
Bowl of chips €5.50
its one of the cheaper places to eat, or go into the shopping mall which is a bit further down and there is a great sandwich place just to the right opposite teh newsagents.
Hi
Lessons are usualy a couple of hours in the morning for 4 or 5 days, if you haven't booked anything check snowguru.com, they list english speaking instructors, if there isn't one listed then they will find you one. You can't have too many lessons when you start out.
How to get to peisey vallandry.....

Some like driving some don't, just my preference, throw everything in the car, and stop at a French hypermarket (Albertville) stock up on food and wine. If you have a diesel a couple of tank full will get you there and back at a steady pace 80MPH (2.0 engine). Takes about 10 hours from Calais to Vallandry, went there 2 years ago. Small resort lots of Dutch as well as Brits, couple of good ski shops sports 2000 especially. A nice bakers and a small Sherpa supermarket.

Joy of driving, no standing in line to check in your gear or having to arrive at 2 and half hours before the flight goes. There is a down side that it is a long time in the car we make about 3 stops of about 20 mins with a long one around lunch time. The way back is the killer we try and get to around Macon and stay over night in an Ibis, Campanile or similar. The up side is you get to ski on change over day (Saturday) and its quieter on the slopes and you leave after the rush.

If you do drive avoid Paris, some of the route planning sites make you go that way, go via Reims.

You can rent people carriers from Avis and Hertz, if you do make sure you rent snow chains (need them if you drive from UK, you can rent them).

For airport transfers try Altibus.com, they do a number of transfers, best bet for you Chambery to Vallandry, not the greatest service though
Snow chains

Car rental in Geneva if picking up from the french side book snow chains (snow pack), the rental cars will not have winter tyres, nor the pass to drive on swiss motorways. If picking up from the Swiss side the car will have winter tyres.

I was in Chatel last year which is low, and the police were turning back anyone without snow chains just before La Linga.

Better to rent a snow pack that lose a day or more skiing. I had to use mine beofre Christmas to ge tthe last 50 yards to the chalet!
