Tony, we could debate this forever really couldn't we? And it is not my intention to do that for fear of being argumentative.
My point was simply that a company that cuts corners/cost on the cheapest and most basic repairs instills precious little confidence in me in other areas. Simple as that.

Pabs, again you are correct. It is just a numbers game. But i was just pointing out that for Tony to say that unsafe planes do not fly due to 'stringent checks' is wrong. Unsafe planes do fly.

American Airlines which has the greatest number of crashes, 13, offsets that against 25m filghts. So the chances are indeed very small.

But that plane will not take off if it is not safe to do so.

If only that were true.

Tell that to the passengers of Japan Airlines flight 123
Tell that to the passengers of American Airlines Flight 191

The fact is that planes DO take off in unsafe conditions, history tells us this. Both the cited examples are botched maintenance and whilst humans maintain aircraft then you are always going to be at the mercy of these technicians.
You are correct in saying flying is really safe, i agree. But to say that unsafe planes do not fly is simply wrong or we would not get crashes like these.

Flying is the safest from of transport. When it rarely goes wrong, its generally catastrophic, point taken. But planes DO NOT just drop out of the sky.

I think you either missed the point of my post or chose to ignore it.

The wings didnt fall off. The engine didnt blow up. The pressurisation didnt fail. It was a crappy old plane that is in need of upgrading, and there were some technical faults.

Im sure that all those things applied too on all the planes that have crashed killing 1000's of people previously. Does it take one of these things falling out of the sky to open your eyes Tony?
Sure, a maggot in and apple or a broken seat is not going to bring a plane down but if corners and costs are cut on such basics then don't you find youself asking if they are all that competent in other, more critical, areas ?????

Top tip:

The next time you're skiing and some German buggers elbow their way towards the front of the queue for the gondolas, wait until the doors on their gondola close, step forward, remove their skis from the racks on the outside and prop them up against the wall.
It makes them rather cross.
RoseR wrote:I knew the planes were old before I went, but I guessed it would be okay. I am a nervous flyer so I probably notice things a bit. Our plane was an hour late leaving Gatwick as the plane was first coming in from France but had, had technical probs that had to be repaired hence we were late. The seats were as Tony said, the lights flickered continually, the loos at the front did,nt work, the door seal was shot to pieces and the draft blew in, the inner rim of our window fell out, so Hubby being a glazier put it back in place and had to use his jacket against it so that the wind did,nt whistle through. There were paint bubbles all over the place that with change of altitude kept exploding. An old bakelite switch burnt out. The in flight meal was a package with the usual wipe and plastic cutlery with an apple which had a maggot in and a biscuit. One cup of tepid coffee, as the water would not heat any more. Bearing in mind that to Finland is a 4hr flight. Any way landed had a fabulous holiday.
On return flight when it landed had huge blocks of ice on windscreen and we were told there would be delay as the heating in the cockpit had failed. The plane was delayed for 24hrs, thankfully we were taken back to resort and put up in a nice hotel, so actually had an extra day.
Boarded the plane which was exactly the same one we flew in on, so same problems on the way back, except Hubby had the maggotts in his apple this time. But where they had fixed the heating it was like a sauna, the sweat absolutely poured off me for 4hrs. So not for me I', afraid.

God that sounds awful, i take vallium for flying so i probably wouldn't have cared....but i feel for you.
I was looking at their summer holiday packages but i think i will pass now.
