I deliberately grow a beard in the week leading up to ski holidays as it keeps my chin warm!

Hi Shapes, and welcome

There's loads of places that could meet all of your requirements and different people on here will give you different opinions on their relative merits

However you probably need to give us a little more info before we get specific:

when? (as, if this clashes with major half term weeks your uncrowded slopes will be tricky)

where? (I know you say Europe but do you have a strong preference for, or aversion to, any particular country due to language skills, previous experience etc)

how? (self catering, hotel, chalet board - as some resorts are far better than others for the latter)

Sorry to ask more questions than give answers but this will help you in the long run

the slopes were not the problem for us - some of the l;ifts were horribly old and slow

I think much of this was sorted for the Turin Olympics but worth checking the piste map carefully for the dreaded "single chair"

I think it may have gone - went last April and it wasn't where I recall it being from a few years ago.

They have also changed the one in Sauze up to Sportina for a faster model.

I think I may go again

Got back from a week in Tignes at the weekend. The snow is fantastic its getting moguled by mid day even the greens - but I have to say conditions are great!

They are very very concerned about avalanches at the moment. Santons was closed most of our time there so we either went down Face which in its moguled state was hard work (fun though!) or just jumped on the gondola and cheated! You could always go down into another village. I would also suggest piste L is shut for the foreseeable future as there was no evidence of a piste at all when we went past!

They were very busy dynamiting etc to keep as much open as possible and usually by 10am everything other than the odd run was open as usual!

Piste L is showing as open today (though I know thats not necessarily accurate). Not one of my faviourite runs to be honest - I prefer the Germain Mattis red. Its harder than the blue but its more consistent.

Yowsers - take more water with it Icy!

Hope that it's not too serious and you're still OK for a later in the season trip?

Santons has been open and closed on and off with Danger Avalanches noted.

The settled weather due this and next week will allow things to calm down and I would imagine it will become open as usual.

Can always get down via La Daille or down the lift from top of Bellevarde anyway.

I hadn't considered that the gully is Santons was avalanche risk but that makes perfect sense I guess

I know there are many other ways down (every one of which, including the Face, is preferable to Santons to me) - was just surprised to see it closed

so here's a random one my J2Ski friends:

Its only 17 days til I go (OK so those of you on the group trip beat me by a week) so I'm now permanently attached to the webcams etc

Was looking here today : http://www.valdisere.com/valdisere/fr/glisse/pistes_remontees/ouvertures_pistes_remontees

and noted that in the whole of VDI there are only 2 pistes closed....

Now Aiglon red being shut is no great shakes but Santons is closed???

I know we all kid on about it being all wrong for its grading etc but Ive never seen it closed before in the middle of the season?

Piste L down from Solaise is often closed (and I personally think that's just like Santons just a different mountain) but Ive never seen Santons closed like this. Any insider info???

As for Tignes then we're only missing the half pipe (!), the Black down form the Grande Motte and a Naturide black so no great losses really!
